A Statistical Model for Helices with Applications [PDF]

open access: yesBiometrics, 2018
Summary Motivated by a cutting edge problem related to the shape of -helices in proteins, we formulate a parametric statistical model, which incorporates the cylindrical nature of the helix. Our focus is to detect a “kink,” which is a drastic change in the axial direction of the helix.

An application of statistics to comparative metagenomics [PDF]

open access: yesBMC Bioinformatics, 2006
Abstract Background Metagenomics, sequence analyses of genomic DNA isolated directly from the environments, can be used to identify organisms and model community dynamics of a particular ecosystem. Metagenomics also has the potential to identify significantly different metabolic potential in different environments.

Restricted Covariance Priors with Applications in Spatial Statistics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We present a Bayesian model for area-level count data that uses Gaussian random effects with a novel type of G-Wishart prior on the inverse variance--covariance matrix.

Statistics of weighted Poisson events and its applications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The statistics of the sum of random weights where the number of weights is Poisson distributed has important applications in nuclear physics, particle physics and astrophysics.

Extreme Value Statistics and Traveling Fronts: Various Applications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
An intriguing connection between extreme value statistics and traveling fronts has been found recently in a number of diverse problems. In this brief review we outline a few such problems and consider their various applications.Comment: A brief review (6

Delta method in large deviations and moderate deviations for estimators [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The delta method is a popular and elementary tool for deriving limiting distributions of transformed statistics, while applications of asymptotic distributions do not allow one to obtain desirable accuracy of approximation for tail probabilities.

Genetic Algorithms for the Imitation of Genomic Styles in Protein Backtranslation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Several technological applications require the translation of a protein into a nucleic acid that codes for it (``backtranslation''). The degeneracy of the genetic code makes this translation ambiguous; moreover, not every translation is equally viable ...

Moment ideals of local Dirac mixtures

open access: yes, 2020
In this paper we study ideals arising from moments of local Dirac measures and their mixtures. We provide generators for the case of first order local Diracs and explain how to obtain the moment ideal of the Pareto distribution from them.

The near-extreme density of intraday log-returns [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The extreme event statistics plays a very important role in the theory and practice of time series analysis. The reassembly of classical theoretical results is often undermined by non-stationarity and dependence between increments.
