Reliability analysis of I-section steel columns designed according to new Brazilian building codes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
This paper presents an evaluation of the safety of I-section steel columns designed according to the new revision of the Brazilian code for design of steel buildings (NBR8800) and to the code for loads and safety of structures (NBR8681).

Novel Functional Materials via 3D Printing by Vat Photopolymerization

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This Perspective systematically analyzes strategies for incorporating functionalities into 3D‐printed materials via Vat Photopolymerization (VP). It explores the spectrum of achievable functionalities in recently reported novel materials—such as conductive, energy‐storing, biodegradable, stimuli‐responsive, self‐healing, shape‐memory, biomaterials, and

Confinement Effect of Concrete-Filled Steel Tube Columns With Infill Concrete of Different Strength Grades

open access: yesFrontiers in Materials, 2019
Concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns are increasingly used in composite construction. Under axial compression, the steel tube will sustain partial axial force and meanwhile provides the confinement to the infill concrete.

Using Long‐Chain Polymechanophores to Explore the Differences in Mechanoactivation During Nozzle Flow and Ultrasonication

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Flow through a nozzle is a common component of most fluid‐based polymer processing techniques such as spray drying, inkjet printing, extrusion. An ultrahigh molecular weight multi‐mechanophore system is used to probe the differences in the distribution of mechanical activation observed between nozzle flow and ultrasonication; the gold standard ...

Finite element modelling of cold formed stainless steel columns [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
This paper describes the results obtained from a finite element investigation into the load capacity of column members of lipped channel cross-section, cold formed from Type 304 stainless steel, subjected to concentric and eccentric compression loading ...

Triblock Polymer Engineering Enables Hydration‐Rich, High‐Performance, Fouling‐Resistant Interfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A molecularly engineered triblock polymer (PHZ) rapidly reorganizes into a hydration‐rich interfacial layer on diverse surfaces, strongly suppressing hydrophobic attraction and fouling. The triblock polymer provides robust energy and steric barriers to oily foulants, enabling high‐performance antifouling at ultralow dosage.

Steel column base classification

open access: yes, 2008
The influence of the rotational characteristics of the column bases on the structural frame response is discussed and specific design criteria for stiffness classification into semi-rigid and rigid joints are derived. The particular case of an industrial portal frame is then considered.

Fire performance of innovative steel-concrete composite columns using high strength steels [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
yesThis paper presents the results of a numerical investigation on strategies for enhancing the fire behaviour of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns by using inner steel profiles such as circular hollow sections (CHS), HEB profiles or embedded ...
