Seismic Energy Demands in Steel Moment Frames

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2016
This study presents an energy approach to the seismic evaluation of steel moment resisting frames. A structure subjected to strong ground motion is supposed that it shows nonlinear behavior. Energy parameters is a way to specify the structural damage. Input energy is depend on the characteristics of the structure and ground motion.

Modeling of steel moment frames for seismic loads

Journal of Constructional Steel Research, 2002
Abstract Simple elastic models based on centerline dimensions of beams and columns are widely used for the design of steel moment resisting frames. However, for the performance prediction and evaluation of these structures, different nonlinear models are being used to better simulate their true behavior.

Behaviour Factor of code-designed steel moment-resisting frames

International Journal of Steel Structures, 2014
Current seismic codes are based on force-controlled design or capacity design, using the base shear concept. The most important parameter in this approach is the response modification factor, also called behaviour factor, which is used to design the structure at the ultimate limit state by taking into account its capacity to dissipate energy by means ...

Effect of Steel Moment-Frame Connections on Robustness of Steel Frames Against Progressive Collapse

The effect on connection performance of the potentially large catenary forc-es that can develop during progressive collapse has not yet been adequately studied in the literature. While undergoing large deformation, the load-resistance mechanism shifts from the traditional flexural mechanism to a ca-tenary mechanism, and the tensile axial force becomes ...

Post-earthquake fire resistance of moment resisting steel frames

Fire Safety Journal, 2003
Fires following earthquakes are considered one major threat in seismic regions. In fact, according to modern seismic codes, ordinary structures are designed to suffer damage to some extent during strong earthquakes, exploiting the structure own ductility to avoid collapse and safeguard human lives. Then, a fire coming soon after an earthquake will find

Fragility and Hazard Analysis of a Welded Steel Moment Resisting Frame

Journal of Earthquake Engineering, 2008
With the move towards performance and consequence-based design and assessment of structures under seismic loading, the engineering community is becoming increasingly convinced that design practices need to be developed and checked using probabilistic methods. In this article, a methodology for the probabilistic assessment of low-rise steel buildings is

Rehabilitation of a 1985 Steel Moment‐Frame Building

Earthquake Spectra, 2003
A 1985 steel moment frame is seismically upgraded using passive energy dissipation, without adding stiffness to the system. The design and analysis techniques for sizing the Velocity Braces™ and their impact on the demand capacity ratios are reviewed. The structure was built in the San Francisco Bay Area in compliance with the 1985

High-Yield-Drift Steel Moment Frames

2014
Earthquake-induced drifts in buildings can be reduced by adding secondary moment frames to provide post-yield stiffness. It is desirable to have secondary frames that will remain elastic up to the expected drifts, but this is challenging to accomplish with traditional configurations.

Generic frame model for simulation of earthquake responses of steel moment frames

Earthquake Engineering & Structural Dynamics, 2001
AbstractThis paper presents a generic frame (GF) model useful for the simulation of earthquake responses of steel moment frames. Adopting the assumption that all rotations at joints lying at each floor level are identical, the model requires the solution of significantly fewer degrees of freedom than models with member‐by‐member representation ...
