Evaluating Plasma Torches as a Low‐Decarburization Preheating Method for MgO–C Refractory Linings

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
This study evaluates direct current (DC) plasma torches using nitrogen as an alternative preheating method for magnesia‐carbon (MgO–C) refractory‐lined ladles. Full‐scale trials at 0.7 and 1.5 MW are compared to conventional gas burner. Plasma‐heated samples show lower decarburization and improved surface integrity due to partial sintering and reduced ...

HWTS 50 Tool Steel Tailored for Laser Powder Bed Fusion: Sliding Wear of Bare Surfaces and Nitriding Response in Comparison with 18Ni300 and AISI H13

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
This work investigates the wear resistance and nitriding behavior of PBF‐LB/M‐processed Osprey HWTS 50, a lean hot work tool steel. Three heat treatment conditions are compared to conventional wrought H13, H11, and PBF‐LB/M 18Ni300. The study highlights HWTS 50's enhanced nitrogen diffusion, deeper nitriding hardness depth, and comparable or improved ...

Highly Abrasion-resistant and Long-lasting Concrete [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Studded tire usage in Alaska contributes to rutting damage on pavements resulting in high maintenance costs and safety issues. In this study binary, ternary, and quaternary highly-abrasion resistant concrete mix designs, using supplementary cementitious ...

Microstructure, Defects, and Fatigue Response of High‐Strength Tool Steels

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
The martensitic tool steel family is designed for use in various working environments where they are subjected to repeatedly high mechanical loads. Despite the continuous upgrade of material´s microstructures through compositional development or processing techniques, defects remain a critical factor for the tool performance by leading to fatigue ...

Bath Vibration During Open Eye Formation in a Physical Model of a Steelmaking Ladle

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
Using a physical model, this study shows that vibration measurements reliably predict open eye size in steelmaking ladles, offering a practical alternative to visual monitoring. Vessel vibrations stabilize faster than the open eye, except at high frequencies near the bottom.

Performance of sulfur/steel slag composite matrix in removing nitrate from surface water with low-carbon content

open access: yesGongye shui chuli
The accumulation of nitrogen pollutants can easily lead to eutrophication of water bodies, and NO3--N is one of the main nitrogen pollutants. A composite matrix of steel slag and elemental sulfur was used for sulfur autotrophic denitrification.

A Thermodynamic‐Kinetic Model for Basic Oxygen Furnace Tapping: Improved Prediction of Phosphorus and Steel‐Slag Evolution

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
This study develops a thermodynamic–kinetic model for basic oxygen furnace tapping and validates its accuracy under near‐equilibrium and far‐from‐equilibrium initial conditions. Comparison with a reference model demonstrates its broader applicability. The model further reveals the evolution of key steel and slag components, providing new transparency ...
