About 6 million tons of steel slag are generated in Germany every year during the production of steel. About 14% of them is landfilled due to some technically or environmentally relevant properties. Nevertheless, increasing costs for the deposition on landfills make their use in earthworks for transportation infrastructure more and more attractive. The

Mineralogy and Leaching of Steel Slag (BOF/LD/Converter steel slag)
2022Integrated steelworks produce steel from iron-ore. Co-produced are vast amounts of slags in the Blast Furnace process (~200-250 kg slag/ton of metal) and Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) process (~100 kg slag/ton of steel). Whereas BF-slag is in high demand for cement use, BOF-slag addition to cement doesn’t create synergy, despite mineralogical similarity ...

Dissolution of steel slags in aqueous media
Environmental Science and Pollution Research, 2017Steel slag is a major industrial waste in steel industries, and its dissolution behavior in water needs to be characterized in the larger context of its potential use as an agent for sequestering CO2. For this purpose, a small closed system batch reactor was used to conduct the dissolution of steel slags in an aqueous medium under various dissolution ...

Experiments were conducted to examine of nitrobenzene reduction by steel convert slag (SCS) with Fe(II) system. The results showed SCS with Fe(II) was an effective reductant for nitrobenzene at pH 5.5-6.5. Further analysis suggested Fe(II) was adsorbed by SCS through ion replacement with SCS-bound Ca(II).
