Using Thermodynamics and Microstructure to Mitigate Overfitting in Pellet Reduction Models

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
A in time and space discretized, thermodynamically sound model for direct reduction of iron oxide pellets is described. The number of fitting parameters is drastically reduced compared to existing models. Nevertheless, fitting kinetic parameters based on conversion degree data alone leads to overfitting, which can be mitigated by correlating the ...

East Asian Steel Projections for the 1990s Revisited [PDF]

open access: yes
In 1989 a research team from the AustraliaJapan Research Centre (AJRC) undertook a study of the prospects for the East Asian steel industry for the 1990s. The aim was to assess the impact of developments in the region on industry strategies in Australia.

Recycling End‐of‐Life Solid Oxide Cell Interconnect Assemblies into Commercial‐Grade AISI 304 Stainless Steels

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
This study validates a recycling pathway for converting interconnect assemblies from end‐of‐life SOC stacks into commercial‐grade AISI 304 steels. Using scrap‐based steelmaking operations, austenitic cast steels with <4.0% δ‐ferrite are successfully produced.

Options of utilizing steelmaking dust in a non-metallurgical industry

open access: yesMetalurgija, 2012
Recycling of by-products of the steelmaking process in electric arc (EAF) furnaces is an important activity from the perspective of environmental protection as well as the steelmaking industry itself.

Effect of Flow Rate and Partial Pressure of Oxygen on Desulfurization of KR Slag

open access: yesMetals
KR (Kanbara Reaction) desulfurization slag is a solid waste that is not sufficiently utilized. This is because the KR desulfurization slag contains 1–2.5% sulfur, which is directly used in steel smelting to increase the sulfur content in molten steel ...

Aligning Real‐Time Recurrence Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulations with Plant Data for the Ruhrstahl–Heraeus Degassing Process of Steel

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
Uncertainties exist in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of complex metallurgical processes, even when partly validated by laboratory experiments. rCFD enables computationally efficient prediction of long‐term RH degassing and can be adapted to vary flow conditions.

The Development of an Optimized Impact Pad for a Six-Strand Tundish Using CFD Simulations

open access: yesApplied Sciences
The behavior of molten steel within a tundish plays a crucial role in achieving uniform temperature and chemical composition, enhancing the removal efficiency of non-metallic inclusions, and reducing the wear of refractory linings.

Thermodynamic Modeling of Sn–C and Fe–Sn–C Systems for the Tramp Elements Control in Steel Production

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
A CALculation of PHAse Diagrams thermodynamic modeling for Fe–Sn–C system is carried out. The model and the developed database can be used to calculate phase diagrams and thermodynamic properties of this system over wide temperature/composition range, and a part of a larger thermodynamic database for steel and alloy system, and effectively used to ...

Effect of Differentiated Injection Ratio, Gas Flow Rate, and Slag Thickness on Mixing Time and Open Eye Area in Gas-Stirred Ladle Assisted by Physical Modeling

open access: yesMetals, 2019
In this work, the effects of equal (50%/50%) or differentiated (75%/25%) gas flow ratio, gas flow rate, and slag thickness on mixing time and open eye area were studied in a physical model of a gas stirred ladle with dual plugs separated by an angle of ...
