IN the method of steepest descents, atomic co-ordinates are derived by minimizing a function of the observed and calculated structure amplitudes. Hughes1 minimizes Σw (F0 – Fc)2, where the weighting factors are w ∼ 1/F02 when F0 > 4 Ft, and w ∼ 1/16 Ft2 when F0 < 4 Ft ; Ft is the threshold value of the measurement. We introduce a further method leading to an approximate solution of the equation Au = f, where A is a positive definite operator, the so-called method of steepest descent. This method is applicable in the case of bounded operators (Def. 8.13, p. 96), therefore not in the case of differential operators.

To estimate a Feynman path integral for a nonrelativistic particle with one degree of freedom in an arbitrary potentialV(x), it is proposed to use a functional method of steepest descent, the analog of the method for finite-dimensional integrals, without going over to the Euclidean form of the theory.
