Representativeness of the Natura 2000 network for preserving plant biodiversity in the European Union

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract The Natura 2000 (N2K) network of protected areas is one of the main tools for area‐based conservation in the European Union (EU), yet its role in preserving plant biodiversity requires better understanding. We examined data kept in the European Vegetation Archive from over 1.2 million vegetation plots and obtained over 14.2 million plant ...

Mapping bee diversity with landscape‐level models to inform conservation

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, EarlyView.
Native bee conservation is complicated by limited distribution data and life history knowledge. However, recent state‐wide pollinator surveys, combined with species distribution models that account for biased datasets and capture regional habitat associations, present a strong foundation for informing essential conservation action.

Media Sentiment and Price Run‐Ups

open access: yesEuropean Financial Management, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We empirically test competing hypotheses about the role of financial media sentiment in price run‐ups. Our global analysis of unusual price increases in stock market segments provides no evidence for long‐term market overreactions fuelled by media reporting.

Has the Euro Paid Off? A Study of the Trade‐Induced Welfare Effects of the EMU

open access: yesJournal of Money, Credit and Banking, EarlyView.
Abstract This paper aims to provide policy‐relevant insights into the effect of the euro on trade. It uses a new data set of bilateral international and intranational manufacturing trade flows for 69 countries over the period 1986−2016. A general equilibrium gravity model is estimated to quantify the welfare effect of the euro and its impact on ...

Mapping the Milestones of Modern Times: Intellectual Landscape of Political Economy Through Bibliometric Analysis

open access: yesJournal of Economic Surveys, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We present the development and current state of the field of political economy. We implemented three bibliometric approaches (i.e., co‐citation, co‐word, and bibliographic coupling) and interpreted the results using the “invisible colleges” framework through six time frames (up until 1989, 1990–2001, 2002–2008, 2009–2016, 2017–2020, 2021–2023).

Towards Hyperparameter Optimizing of Sparse Bayesian Learning Based on Stein's Unbiased Risk Estimator

open access: yes2024 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory Workshops (ISIT-W)
Sparse Bayesian Learning (SBL) stands as a widely utilized compressed sensing technique wherein the sparsity-inducing prior for the unknowns within the underdetermined linear system is characterized by a Gaussian scale mixture. This formulation results in several hyperparameters, which encompass the variance profile, noise variance, and potentially ...

The Causal Relationship Between Jurisdiction Size and Institutional Quality

open access: yesJournal of Regional Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT While the relationship between jurisdiction size and economic and electoral outcomes has been extensively studied, its causal impact on institutional capacity and quality remains unexplored. Leveraging the mergers of 197 Italian municipalities, we investigate changes in administrative quality using the Municipal Administration Quality Index ...

Bayesian Inference for Joint Estimation Models Using Copulas to Handle Endogenous Regressors

open access: yesOxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study proposes a Bayesian approach for finite‐sample inference of the Gaussian copula endogeneity correction. Extant studies use frequentist inference, build on a priori computed estimates of marginal distributions of explanatory variables, and use bootstrapping to obtain standard errors. The proposed Bayesian approach facilitates precise

Repeatability, Genetic Variability and Importance of Forage Traits in Ecotypes of Brunswickgrass (Paspalum nicorae Parodi) via BLUP

open access: yesPlant Breeding, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study estimated the repeatability of forage traits in 84 Paspalum nicorae ecotypes using six statistical methods and quantified the minimum number of harvests needed for effective selection. Multivariate analyses based on best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) values were also performed to assess genetic variability, identify key traits ...
