What follows is a paper presented in May 1992 in Vienna at a conference honoring the eightieth birthday of Josef Steindl. Tibor Scitovsky is an emeritus professor of economics at Stanford where he was a colleague and close friend of the late Paul Baran, co-author with Paul Sweezy of Monopoly Capital, published by MR Press in 1966.

Abstract Josef Steindl's first substantive publication was a nine-page review of Roy Harrod's book The Trade Cycle (1936), which appeared in the June 1937 issue of the Austrian journal, Zeitschrift fur Nationalokonomie. The review reveals the Austrian – or, as he put it, the neo-Wicksellian – roots of Steindl's early macroeconomic thinking.

Steindl's Contribution to the Theory of Industry Concentration

Over a period of some fifty years from the early 1940s until his death in 1993, Josef Steindl developed and expounded a theory of industry concentration. His analysis deals explicitly with differences in costs and demand among firms producing similar products. These differences lead to differences in firm growth, so that his analysis is dynamic.
