The stellar atmospheres problem
Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative Transfer, 1971Abstract This paper discusses the construction of model stellar atmospheres placing particular stress on the mathematical methods used. The basic equations and assumptions of the problem are presented. Techniques which reduce the transfer equation to a set of linear equations are developed.

Motions in Stellar Atmospheres
Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 1959It has become increasingly obvious that we should not regard stellar atmospheres as homogeneous and static but must study special effects of forces other than gravity if we are to gain any satisfactorily complete comprehension of the general behavior of these atmospheres.

Abstract : The research completed under this grant provides an understanding of blue stragglers, partial calibration of the Stromgren uvby and H beta photometric systems, and some initial results concerning the nature of horizontal branch and post-horizontal branch evolution of Population 2 stars.

Schwarzschild’s scientific contributions to the fields of solar physics and of the physics of stellar atmospheres were concentrated in two periods. The first began with his observation of the total solar eclipse of 1905 August 30 in Algeria, and covered the years 1905–1906. After several years break, he again became active in this field in 1913–1914.
