Accretion flares from stellar collisions in galactic nuclei

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
Context. The strong tidal force in a supermassive black hole’s (SMBH) vicinity, coupled with a higher stellar density at the center of a galaxy, make it an ideal location to study the interaction between stars and black holes. Two stars moving near the SMBH could collide at a very high speed, which can result in a high energy flare.

Ground to Dust: Collisional Cascades and the Fate of Kardashev II Megaswarms

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Extraterrestrial intelligences are speculated to surround stars with structures to collect their energy or to signal distant observers. If they exist, these most likely are megaswarms, vast constellations of satellites (elements) in orbit around the ...

Nanoarchitectonics of Metal–Organic Framework and Nanocellulose Composites for Multifunctional Environmental Remediation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Nanoscale metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and nanocellulose composites have significant potential for the multi‐functional remediation of the environment. This review focused on the synthesis strategies (in situ growth, ex situ growth, and other approaches), typical forms (aerogel, hydrogel, beads, and membrane), and applications in the removal of ...

The Secular Periodic Evolution of X-Ray Quasiperiodic Eruptions Driven by Star−Disk Collisions

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We study the secular periodic evolution of quasiperiodic eruptions (QPEs) for GSN069 and eRO-QPE2 assuming that they are driven by star−disk collisions. We set up numerical simulations and compared them with the observed periodic decay of ∼−3160 ± 720 s ...

Evolution of the remnants of stellar collisions

open access: yes, 2008
Collisions between stars occur naturally in star clusters. The outcome of such collisions is a new single star that may have peculiar properties that affect its subsequent evolution. For low mass stars, such merger events are a possible formation channel for blue straggler stars, stars more massive than expected for a starcluster of a given age.

Stability of C59 Knockout Fragments from Femtoseconds to Infinity

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We have studied the stability of C _59 anions as a function of time, from their formation on femtosecond timescales to their stabilization on second timescales and beyond, using a combination of theory and experiments. The ${{\rm{C}}}_{59}^{-}$ fragments

Volumetric 3D Printing and Melt‐Electrowriting to Fabricate Implantable Reinforced Cardiac Tissue Patches

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents an implantable reinforced cardiac patch (RCPatch) combining volumetrically 3D‐printed metamaterials with melt‐electrowritten (MEW) meshes. The design integrates tunable stiff polymer structures with soft, cell‐laden hydrogels. The RCPatch withstands suturing, intraventricular pressure, and cardiac contraction in a large animal ...

Origins of Super Jupiters: TOI-2145b has a Moderately Eccentric and Nearly Aligned Orbit

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal
Super Jupiters are giant planets with several Jupiter masses. It remains an open question whether these planets originate with such high masses or grow through collisions.
