Star−Disk Collisions: Implications for Quasi-periodic Eruptions and Other Transients near Supermassive Black Holes

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We use Athena++ to study the hydrodynamics of repeated star−accretion disk collisions close to supermassive black holes, and we discuss their implications for the origin of quasi-periodic eruptions (QPEs) and other repeating nuclear transients.

The aftermath of the Great Collision between our Galaxy and the Large Magellanic Cloud [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2018
The Milky Way (MW) offers a uniquely detailed view of galactic structure and is often regarded as a prototypical spiral galaxy. But recent observations indicate that the MW is atypical: it has an undersized supermassive black hole at its centre; it is ...

Atomic Hydrogen and Star Formation in the Bridge/Ring Interacting Galaxy Pair NGC 7714/7715 (Arp 284) [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
We present high spatial resolution 21 cm HI maps of the interacting galaxy pair NGC 7714/7715. We detect a massive (2 x 10**9 M(sun)) HI bridge connecting the galaxies that is parallel to but offset from the stellar bridge.

Heating of stellar systems by binary collisions [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 1983

Multiparticle collision simulations of dense stellar systems and plasmas

open access: yesProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2020
AbstractWe summarize a series of numerical experiments of collisional dynamics in dense stellar systems such as globular clusters (GCs) and in weakly collisional plasmas using a novel simulation technique, the so-calledMulti-particle collision (MPC) method, alternative to Fokker-Planck and Monte Carlo approaches.

Direct imaging of molten protoplanets in nearby young stellar associations [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2018
During their formation and early evolution, rocky planets undergo multiple global melting events due to accretionary collisions with other protoplanets.

Stellar Collisions and Ultracompact X‐Ray Binary Formation [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2006
(abridged) We report the results of SPH calculations of parabolic collisions between a subgiant or slightly evolved red-giant star and a neutron star (NS). Such collisions are likely to form ultracompact X-ray binaries (UCXBs) observed today in old globular clusters.

A collision operator for describing dissipation in noncanonical phase space

open access: yesFundamental Plasma Physics
The phase space of a noncanonical Hamiltonian system is partially inaccessible due to dynamical constraints (Casimir invariants) arising from the kernel of the Poisson tensor.

Models of Individual Blue Stragglers

open access: yes, 2014
This chapter describes the current state of models of individual blue stragglers. Stellar collisions, binary mergers (or coalescence), and partial or ongoing mass transfer have all been studied in some detail.

X-Ray, Near-ultraviolet, and Optical Flares Produced by Colliding Magnetospheres in the Young High-eccentricity Binary DQ Tau

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
DQ Tau is a unique young high-eccentricity binary system that exhibits regular magnetic reconnection flares and pulsed accretion near periastron. We conducted NuSTAR, Swift, and Chandra observations during the 2022 July 30 periastron to characterize X ...
