Beyond Spectroscopy. II. Stellar Parameters for over 20 Million Stars in the Northern Sky from SAGES DR1 and Gaia DR3 [PDF]
We present precise photometric estimates of stellar parameters, including effective temperature, metallicity, luminosity classification, distance, and stellar age, for nearly 26 million stars using the methodology developed in the first paper of this ...

The stellar content and distance of UGC 4483 [PDF]
We present HST/WFPC2 observations of UGC 4483, an irregular galaxy in the M81/NGC 2403 complex. Stellar photometry was carried out with HSTphot, and is complete to V ~ 26.0 and I ~ 24.7. We measure the red giant branch tip at I = 23.56 +/- 0.10 and calculated a distance modulus of (m-M)o = 27.53 +/- 0.12 (corresponding to a distance of 3.2 +/- 0.2 Mpc),

Stellar Distance and Velocity (II)
The use of parallax angles is one of the standard methods for determining stellar distance. The problem that arises in using this method is how to measure that angle. In order for the measurement to be correct, it is necessary for the object we are observing to be stationary in relation to the sun. This is generally not true.

In this paper, a method is presented by which it is possible to determine a distance between the sun and a star as well as a velocity at which the star moves relative to the sun. In order to achieve this, it is sufficient to know three positions of the star and the unit vectors determined by the star and three arbitrarily chosen points that do not lie ...

Resolved Stellar Populations at the Distance of Virgo [PDF]
Top of the wish list of any astronomer who wants to understand galaxy formation and evolution is to resolve the stellar populations of a sample of giant elliptical galaxies: to take spectra of the stars and make Colour-Magnitude Diagrams going down to ...

Stellar twins determine the distance of the Pleiades [PDF]
Since the release of the Hipparcos catalog in 1997, the distance to the Pleiades open cluster has been heavily debated. The distance obtained from Hipparcos and those by alternative methods differ by 10 to 15 %. As accurate stellar distances are key to understanding stellar structure and evolution, this dilemma puts the validity of stellar evolution ...

DREAM-Stellar: parallel and space efficient exact local alignment [PDF]
Background Searching large genomic data sets for local alignments poses a computational challenge. A particular obstacle is the handling of repetitive sequences that appear in various contexts and incur a high runtime cost. For practical homology search,

Dynamics of stellar and HI streams in the Milky Way halo
Stellar streams are key players in many aspects of Milky Way studies and, in particular, studying their orbital dynamics is crucial for furthering our understanding of the Milky Wayʼs gravitational potential.

Old-Aged Stellar Population Distance Indicators
Old-aged stellar distance indicators are present in all Galactic structures (halo, bulge, disk) and in galaxies of all Hubble types and, thus, are immensely powerful tools for understanding our Universe. Here we present a comprehensive review for three primary standard candles from Population II: (i) RR Lyrae type variables (RRL), (ii) type II Cepheid ...

Distance determination for RAVE stars using stellar models [PDF]
(Abridged) Aims:We develop a method for deriving distances from spectroscopic data and obtaining full 6D phase-space coordinates for the RAVE survey's second data release. Methods: We used stellar models combined with atmospheric properties from RAVE (Teff, logg and [Fe/H]) and (J-Ks) photometry from archival sources to derive absolute magnitudes.
