The Stellar Magnitudes and Distances
1987Trigonometric parallax provides a highly accurate method of determining the distance to the nearest stars. The technique is essentially the same as the terrestrial surveying method of triangulation, in which the distance towards a point is measured by taking sightings, and measuring the angles to the point from either end of a baseline of known length.

Parallax as a Measure for Stellar Distances
1969Distances in astronomy are usually so enormous, that they can only be measured by means of large instruments and a very careful measuring technique. We shall imitate the method of working on an enormously enlarged scale and with artificial light-sources.

An Empirical Method to Derive Distances to Stellar Clusters
2001Based on a (V − K)0 Barnes—Evans relation and accurately-determined radii for the components of eclipsing binary systems, we define three empirical relationships that can be combined to estimate distances to stars. Comparison with Hipparcos trigonometric parallaxes shows that the method provides errors of about 15% for a single star, when reddening is ...

Variables as stellar tracers and distance indicators
2020The importance of pulsating stars as stellar population tracers and primary distance indicators is briefly reviewed. In particular, we discuss several approaches based on the comparison between the predictions of nonlinear convective pulsation models and observations, to constrain the intrinsic stellar parameters.
