Dynamical Evolution of Stellar Systems

EAS Publications Series, 2016
Dynamical simulations have become a powerful tool to study the evolution of star clusters due to hardware and software progresses in recent years. Here, I review the state of the art of N-body and other simulation techniques and show what we have learned from these simulations about the dynamical evolution of star clusters.

Statistical Hypotheses in Stellar Dynamics

Physical Review, 1946
This paper starts with a short review of the usual methods of stellar dynamics and analyzes the underlying hypotheses. The most successful approach to stellar dynamics has been the one which neglects interactions between nearby stars (because they are weak) and takes into consideration the motion of stars in a smooth field of force only, produced by ...

Applications to stellar and galactic dynamics

Celestial Mechanics, 1988
Computation and a wealth of new observational techniques have reinvigorated dynamical studies of galaxies and star clusters. These objects are examples of the gravitational n-body problem with n in the range from a few hundred to 1011. Relaxation effects dominate at the low end and are completely negligible at the high end.

Regularization in stellar dynamics

Bulletin astronomique, 1968
On présente les traitements numériques et analytiques des rencontres (ainsi que des collisions doubles) en utilisant le modèle du problème gravitationel des n corps. L'effet du champ Newtonien de gravitation devient infini quand la distance des corps mis en jeu tend vers zéro.

Principles of Stellar Dynamics

Physics Bulletin, 1961
By S. Chandrasekhar New York: Dover Publications, Inc. Pp. x+313. Price $2.00 Among the classics of physics and astronomy now reappearing in the Dover edition, it is especially pleasing to welcome this book, which nearly twenty years ago developed the application of generalized dynamics to the largest assemblage of " molecules " known, the hundred ...

Principles of Stellar Dynamics

Nature, 1943
AS a subject progresses the attractive simplicity of the early researches gives place to laborious elaboration. In the last three years, Dr. Chandrasekhar has been very active in the mathematical development of stellar dynamics. The trend of his work may be judged from the fact that one contribution alone contains more than 1,800 numbered formulae ...
