GAIA AND PHYSICS OF STELLAR INTERIORS

EAS Publications Series, 2002
Understanding the stellar interiors is an important issue for astrophysics, but also for fundamental physics. The physical description of the stellar material implies statistical physics as well as hydrodynamics. We give examples of unsolved physical problems and their consequences for predictions of stellar properties and evolution.

Formation Channels of Single and Binary Stellar-Mass Black Holes

Handbook of Gravitational Wave Astronomy, 2021
These are exciting times for binary black hole (BBH) research. LIGO and Virgo detections are progressively drawing a spectacular fresco of BBH masses, spins and merger rates.

Physics optimization of stellarators

Physics of Fluids B: Plasma Physics, 1992
The theoretical and experimental development of stellarators has removed some of the specific deficiencies of this configuration, viz., the limitations in β, the high neoclassical transport, and the low collisionless confinement of α particles. These optimized stellarators can best be realized with a modular coil system.

It's written in the massive stars: The role of stellar physics in the formation of black holes

Astronomy & Astrophysics
In the age of gravitational-wave (GW) sources and newly discovered local black holes (BHs) and neutron stars (NSs), understanding the fate of stars is a key question.

Physics of Stellar Convection

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2009
We review recent progress using numerical simulations as a testbed for development of a theory of stellar convection, much as envisaged by John von Newmann. Necessary features of the theory, non‐locality and fluctuations, are illustrated by computer movies.

Theoretical Stellar Pulsation Physics

Proceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2022
AbstractPulsating stars play a crucial role in the calibration of the cosmic distance scale as well as in tracing the properties of the associated stellar populations. In the era of large observational surveys and precise astrometric missions, it is crucial to rely on accurate stellar pulsation models able to predict the observed behaviors for ...

Physics of compact stellarators

Physics of Plasmas, 1999
Recent progress in the theoretical understanding and design of compact stellarators is described. Hybrid devices, which depart from canonical stellarators by deriving benefits from the bootstrap current which flows at finite beta, comprise a class of low aspect ratio A<4 stellarators.
