The Resolved Stellar Population of Leo A

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1996
New observations of the resolved stellar population of the extremely metal-poor Magellanic dwarf irregular galaxy Leo A in Thuan-Gunn r, g, i, and narrowband Ha filters are presented. Using the recent Cepheid variable star distance determination to Leo A by Hoessel et al., we are able to create an accurate color-magnitude diagram (CMD).

Stellar populations of classical and pseudo-bulges for a sample of isolated spiral galaxies

open access: yes, 2011
In this paper we present the stellar population synthesis results for a sample of 75 bulges in isolated spiral Sb-Sc galaxies, using the spectroscopic data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the STARLIGHT code.

Investigating the cell of origin and novel molecular targets in Merkel cell carcinoma: a historic misnomer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study indicates that Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) does not originate from Merkel cells, and identifies gene, protein & cellular expression of immune‐linked and neuroendocrine markers in primary and metastatic Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) tumor samples, linked to Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) status, with enrichment of B‐cell and other immune cell

The Origin of Young Stellar Populations in NGC 1783: Accretion of External Stars

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The presence of young stellar populations in the Large Magellanic Cloud cluster NGC 1783 has caught significant attention, with suggestions ranging from it being a genuine secondary stellar generation to a population of blue straggler stars or simply ...

Spectropolarimetry for Discerning Geometry and Structure in Circumstellar Media of Hot Massive Stars

open access: yesGalaxies
Spectropolarimetric techniques are a mainstay of astrophysical inquiry, ranging from Solar System objects to the Cosmic Background Radiation. This review highlights applications of stellar polarimetry for massive hot stars, particularly in the context of

Calibrated stellar models for metal-poor population

open access: yes, 2004
We extend to lower metallicities recent evolutionary computations devoted to Magellanic Clouds stars, presenting and discussing new stellar models with Z=0.0002, 0.0004, 0.0006, 0.001 and suitable assumptions about the original He content.

In vitro properties of patient serum predict clinical outcome after high dose rate brachytherapy of hepatocellular carcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Following high dose rate brachytherapy (HDR‐BT) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), patients were classified as responders and nonresponders. Post‐therapy serum induced increased BrdU incorporation and Cyclin E expression of Huh7 and HepG2 cells in nonresponders, but decreased levels in responders.

New Stellar Parameters, Metallicities, and Elemental Abundance Ratios for 311 Metal-poor Stars

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal
We present equivalent widths, improved model atmosphere parameters, and revised abundances for 14 species of 11 elements derived from high-resolution optical spectroscopy of 311 metal-poor stars.

Stellar Population Models [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2006
AbstractModelling stellar populations in galaxies is a key approach to gain knowledge on the still elusive process of galaxy formation as a function of cosmic time. In this review, after a summary of the state-of-art, I discuss three aspects of the modelling, that are particularly relevant to massive galaxies, the focus of this symposium, at low and ...
