ABSTRACT: We study the weakly nonlinear evolution of acoustic instability of a plane‐parallel polytrope with thermal dissipation in the form of Newton's law of cooling. The most unstable horizontal wavenumbers form a band around zero and this permits the development of a nonlinear pattern theory leading to a complex Ginzburg‐Landau equation (CGLE ...

Analysis of the ECH effect on EPM/AE stability in Heliotron J plasma using a Landau closure model
The aim of the present study is to analyze the effect of the electron cyclotron heating (ECH) on the linear stability of Alfvén eigenmodes (AEs) and energetic particle modes (EPMs) triggered by energetic ions in Heliotron J plasma.

Nonlinear growth of zonal flows by secondary instability in general magnetic geometry
We present a theory of the nonlinear growth of zonal flows in magnetized plasma turbulence, by the mechanism of secondary instability. The theory is derived for general magnetic geometry, and is thus applicable to both tokamaks and stellarators.

A framework for discrete optimization of stellarator coils
Designing magnets for three-dimensional plasma confinement is a key task for advancing the stellarator as a fusion reactor concept. Stellarator magnets must produce an accurate field while leaving adequate room for other components and being reasonably ...

Modelling the scrape-off layer of a stellarator is challenging due to the complex magnetic 3D geometry. The here presented study analyses simulations of the scrape-off layer (SOL) of the stellarator Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) using spatially varying ...

Wall conditioning at the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator operating with a graphite divertor
Wall conditioning plays an important role in achieving record plasma performance on the superconducting stellarator Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) by controlling plasma density and maintaining low levels of impurities.

Stellar Magnetism affects all spectral types and exists and varies throughout the evolution of stars. Magnetic fields can affect not only the interior of stars, but also their circumstellar environments. In this chapter, we concentrate on the magnetic fields that can be measured at the surface of stars through the influence of the Zeeman effect on ...

Oscillatory relaxation of zonal flows in a multi-species stellarator plasma
The low frequency oscillatory relaxation of zonal potential perturbations is studied numerically in the TJ-II stellarator (where it was experimentally detected for the first time).
