Piecewise Omnigenous Stellarators

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters
In omnigenous magnetic fields, charged particles are perfectly confined in the absence of collisions and turbulence. For this reason, the magnetic configuration is optimized to be close to omnigenity in any candidate for a stellarator fusion reactor.

Validation of a synthetic fast ion loss detector model for Wendelstein 7-X

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
We present the first validated synthetic diagnostic for fast ion loss detectors (FILDs) in the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator. This model has been developed on, and validated against experimental data from, a FILD provided by the National Institute ...

Nonlinear excitation of energetic particle-induced geodesic acoustic mode via resonance overlap in CFQS

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
Energetic particle (EP) driven instabilities are investigated in the Chinese First Quasi-axisymmetric Stellarator using the hybrid kinetic-magnetohydrodynamic code MEGA.

Energetic particle loss under the effects of the radial electric field in LHD

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
The impact of the radial electric field $({E_{\text{r}}})$ on the confinement of energetic particles (EPs) in the Large Helical Device is studied through gyrokinetic simulation.

Modelling of the effect of particle species on beam losses in W7-X

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
In Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X), future campaigns will include H, D and He as both NBI injection and target plasmas but, so far, only H injection and target plasmas have been extensively performed.

Influence of stochastic coil perturbations on magnetic configurations in Chinese First Quasi-axisymmetric Stellarator

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
Error fields resulting from deformations of coils are inevitable during fabrication, assembly and operation in all nuclear fusion devices. The magnetic topologies of stellarators are primarily produced by external coils, which are quite sensitive to ...

Design workflow of a symmetric traveling wave antenna for fast ion production on DD tokamaks

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
Initial computational plasma physics scoping and a finite element method antenna modeling design workflow for a symmetric center-fed high-field side high harmonic fast wave traveling wave array (TWA) antenna are reported here.

Physical origin of ultra-high neutral pressures in the Large Helical Device

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
Efficient particle exhaust remains a key challenge in magnetic confinement fusion, particularly in stellarators, where divertor neutral pressures are typically low. Recently, exceptionally high neutral pressures-up to 2.4 Pa-were measured in the divertor

Design of 3D equilibria and coils for steady-state operation of tokamaks

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
Inspired by the respective advantages of tokamaks and stellarators, we propose a quasi-axisymmetric (QA) tokamak-stellarator hybrid concept as a steady-state operation mode of standard tokamaks.
