Acoustic identification of female Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus)

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2002
Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) mothers and pups establish and maintain contact with individually distinctive vocalizations. Our objective was to develop a robust neural network to classify females based on their mother-pup contact calls. We catalogued 573 contact calls from 25 females in 1998 and 1323 calls from 46 females in 1999.

Abundance and Distribution of the Steller Sea Lion

Journal of Mammalogy, 1961
Observations of the Steller sea lion, Eumetopias jubata , including hauling-out habits, seasonal movements, and aerial surveys in eastern Bering Sea from Bering Strait to and including the Aleutian Islands, are presented. Sea lions haul out during winter and spring, prior to the breeding season, in greater numbers in afternoon hours than in morning ...

MASS ESTIMATES USING BODY MORPHOLOGY IN STELLER SEA LIONS

Marine Mammal Science, 1993
Abstract: Analytical procedures developed from studies on phocids for relating body morphometrics (length and girth) to mass were applied to 390 Steller sea lions from the Gulf of Alaska and the Bering Sea. The equations relating body volume to mass were significant and had very high correlation coefficients for animals from about 60 to over 900 kg ...

Small intestinal volvulus in a captive Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus)

Veterinary Record, 2006
INTESTINAL obstruction is by far the most common cause of digestive disease in all species (Catherrine 1992). Obstruction can be induced by volvulus, torsion, hernias, strangulation or intussusception (Barker and others 1993). Volvulus has been widely reported in small and large domesticated animals (Andrews 1970, Todd and others 1977, Curtis 1988 ...

TURNING MANEUVERS IN STELLER SEA LIONS (EUMATOPIAS JUBATUS)

Marine Mammal Science, 2006
AbstractSteller sea lions are highly maneuverable marine mammals (expressed as minimum turning radius). Video recordings of turns (n= 195) are analyzed from kinematic measurements for three captive animals. Speed‐time plots of 180° turns have a typical “V‐shape.” The sea lions decelerated during the first half of the turn, reached a minimum speed in ...

Food and Feeding Behavior of Steller and California Sea Lions

Journal of Mammalogy, 1966
Sea lions taken on land usually have empty stomachs. To obtain sea lions with food in their stomachs, 34 Steiler sea lions and 7 California sea lions were taken at sea. Stomachs of California sea lions contained squids, hake and anchovies. Stomachs of Steiler sea lions taken off California and Oregon contained flatfishes and rockfishes; those taken in ...
