Taxonomic composition and functional potentials of gastrointestinal microbiota in 12 wild-stranded cetaceans [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology
Cetaceans play a crucial role in marine ecosystems; however, research on their gastrointestinal microbiota remains limited due to sampling constraints.

Morphology of the Tympano-Periotic Complex in Stranded Odontocetes in Northeast Brazil. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Morphol
This study presents the morphological and morphometric characterization of the tympano‐periotic complex (TPC) in six odontocete species stranded along the northeastern coast of Brazil. A total of 57 TPCs were analyzed, revealing interspecific differences in key anatomical features and supporting taxonomic differentiation.

A Dangerous Prey Fish? Brachyspira-Rich Gastrointestinal Microbiota in Pompano Dolphinfish From Neritic and Deep Waters of the South China Sea. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
This study reveals an unexpectedly simplified, Brachyspira‐dominated gastrointestinal microbiota in pompano dolphinfish from both neritic and deep‐sea habitats of the South China Sea. Environmental DNA and functional analyses suggest these fish may acquire potential pathogens in anthropogenically influenced coastal waters and transport them offshore ...

Spatial Distribution and Abundance of Small Cetaceans in the Pacific Waters of Guatemala

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2021
The establishment of marine protected areas (MPAs) requires a thorough assessment of the abundance, distribution, and habitat preferences of a variety of marine species.

How is the third jaw joint in whales different? Diverse modes of articulation between the jaws of whales. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Anat
This study conducts the first comprehensive morphological investigation of the mandibular symphysis in whales. Using gross anatomical observation and CT cross‐sectional data, we describe diverse joint morphologies across 74 extant and fossil cetacean taxa. Toothed whales exhibit unfused, partially fused, or fully fused symphyses.

Back to Water: Signature of Adaptive Evolution in Cetacean Mitochondrial tRNAs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The mitochondrion is the power plant of the eukaryotic cell, and tRNAs are the fundamental components of its translational machinery. In the present paper, the evolution of mitochondrial tRNAs was investigated in the Cetacea, a clade of Cetartiodactyla ...
