Mercury in Caribbean dolphins (Stenella longirostris and Stenella frontalis) caught for human consumption off St. Vincent, West Indies

Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2014
The island of St. Vincent in the Lesser Antilles supports an ongoing, legal cetacean hunt, which targets several species for human consumption. Little is known regarding the healthfulness and potential health risks of these foods in this setting. Following established methodologies we analyzed 39 raw muscle tissue samples and 38 raw blubber samples ...

Whistles emitted by Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) in southeastern Brazil

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2010
The whistles of Atlantic spotted dolphins have been studied in a few localities of the North Atlantic Ocean and those studies revealed that the species emits whistles within a broad frequency range, with a high number of inflection points and presence of harmonics.

Toxoplasmosis in three stranded atlantic spotted dolphiln (stenella frontalis) in Canary islands

2023
Toxoplasma gondii has been reported to cause mortalities in marine mammals, including many cetaceans’ species. From 2001 to 2006, 36 Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) stranded in Canary Islands have been necropsied. Tissue samples were fixed in 10% buffered formalin and embedded in paraffin, sectioned and stained whith Haematoxylin and ...

Evidence of teaching in atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) by mother dolphins foraging in the presence of their calves

Animal Cognition, 2008
Teaching is a powerful form of social learning, but there is little systematic evidence that it occurs in species other than humans. Using long-term video archives the foraging behaviors by mother Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) were observed when their calves were present and when their calves were not present, including in the presence

Contamination by chlorinated pesticides, PCBs and PBDEs in Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis) in western South Atlantic

Chemosphere, 2012
Chlorinated pesticides, PCBs and PBDEs were analysed in nine blubber samples of Atlantic spotted dolphins, Stenella frontalis, incidentally captured during fishing operations in southern and southeastern Brazil between 2005 and 2007. The majority of compounds analysed were detected, suggesting widespread contamination over the region.

Community structure and cluster definition of Atlantic spotted dolphins, Stenella frontalis, in the Bahamas

Marine Mammal Science, 2012
AbstractFission‐fusion dynamics typical of many delphinid populations allow for a variety of social grouping patterns. Identifying these groupings is crucial before conducting a detailed social structure analysis. This study analyzed the structure of a population of Bahamian spotted dolphins, Stenella frontalis.

Organohalogen compounds in a hotspot for chemical pollution: Assessment in free-ranging Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis)

Science of The Total Environment
The assessment of chemical pollution in free-ranging living mammals is viable using remote biopsies and portrays a comprehensive scenario of environmental health. The Southwestern Atlantic Ocean holds incredible biodiversity, but it is under the constant and invisible threat of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) of anthropogenic origin, such as ...

Analysis of fish otolith in the stomach contents of the atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis) in the Canary Islands

2023
At this final grade project are exposed the results of the study carried out with the scientific NGO SECAC (Society for the Study of the Cetaceans in the Canary Archipelago) working in the BIOCETCAN project. The study was based on the analysis of the fish otoliths found in the stomach contents of the Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis ...
