Strong‐Acid Weathering in a Carbonate‐Siliciclastic Cropland Diminishes Removal of CO2 From the Atmosphere Without Becoming a CO2 Source

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, Volume 131, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract One strategy to remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere is to accelerate weathering in croplands by adding powdered rock. Both silicate and carbonate minerals can be effective as amendments, but strong acids from rain and fertilizer diminish CO2 removal and can promote degassing of CO2 from carbonate minerals (geogenic CO2).

Amazon River Plume Control on Carbonate Chemistry in the Western Tropical Atlantic

open access: yesGlobal Biogeochemical Cycles, Volume 40, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract The Amazon River Plume (ARP) modulates the carbonate system of the western Tropical Atlantic (WTA) through physical and biological processes, including freshwater dilution, biological carbon uptake, and circulation‐driven transport; however, its basin‐scale impact has not been quantitatively assessed.

The Transformation of Trace Metal Distributions Across the Mackenzie Shelf and Through the Northwest Passage

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract Understanding the distributions of trace elements, like iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), barium (Ba), and vanadium (V) in the Arctic Ocean is motivated in part because they can modulate key biogeochemical rate processes as micronutrients and/or toxins for primary producers ...

Phosphate Enrichment From Wildlife Inputs Shapes the Distribution and Pigmentation of Green and Red Snow Algae Along the West Antarctic Peninsula

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, Volume 131, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract Snow algae darken snow through biomass accumulation and pigmentation, yet nutrient controls on algal abundance and pigment composition in Antarctic snowfields remain poorly constrained. Along the West Antarctic Peninsula (WAP), coastal snowfields receive nutrient inputs from marine and wildlife sources that may influence bloom development.

Evaluation of Timing and Amplitude Biases in the Controls of Simulated Southern Ocean pCO2

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, Volume 18, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract The Southern Ocean is a major sink for atmospheric carbon dioxide and critical to the current and future carbon cycle. This net annual CO2 ${\text{CO}}_{2}$ flux reflects the balance of strong seasonal variability characterized by opposing periods of winter outgassing and summer uptake. Using a simple framework, we evaluate how model biases in
