Hydraulics of Stepped Spillways and Cascades [PDF]

open access: possible, 1994
Stepped spillways have become a popular method for handling flood releases. The steps increase significantly the rate of energy dissipation taking place on the spillway face and reduce the size of the required downstream energy dissipation basin.

A Transition Flow Regime on Stepped Spillways : The Facts [PDF]

open access: possible, 2001
The stepped channel design have been used since more than 3,000 years. It is understood that low flows behave as successions of free-jets (i.e. nappe flow) while large discharges skim over the pseudo-bottom formed by the step edges. For a range of intermediate flow rates, a transition flow regime takes place.
