Enhancing flow aeration on an embankment sloped stepped spillway using a labyrinth weir
Journal of Hydraulic ResearchThis study presents for the first time a detailed laboratory investigation on the influence of a labyrinth weir as an aerator and corresponding effects on the air–water flow properties in a moderate-sloping (3H:1V) stepped chute.

Hydraulics of stepped spillways with different numbers of steps
Dams and Reservoirs, 2010This paper describes the study of two physical models that were built to investigate the energy dissipation and flow regimes for different discharges over stepped spillways with different numbers of steps. These physical models had a general slope of 19·2% and had 12 and 23 steps respectively.

This technical note presents a method to estimate the energy loss on stepped spillways for the jet‐flow regime, which occurs when the ratio of the critical depth yc to the height of the step h is less than approximately 0.8. It introduces the concept of α, the proportional energy loss per step, and using the extensive experimental results of Horner, α;

Hydraulics of Stepped Spillways
2020This book provides a discussion of the latest research pertaining to the hydraulic design of spilways and to hydraulic engineering in general. It comprises the papers of a workshop organized to bring together engineers and scientists from around the world for the exchange of ideas on water flow over stepped spillways.

Air–Water Flows and Head Losses on Stepped Spillways with Inclined Steps
Journal of Irrigation and Drainage Engineering, 2022On a stepped spillway, the staircase invert profile generates some intense turbulent dissipation during the spill, associated with a significant reduction of kinetic energy, as well as strong self-aeration. The present study focused on the effects of inclined downward steps on the air–water flow properties, flow resistance, and head losses because ...

Converging stepped spillway flow
Journal of Hydraulic Research, 2016ABSTRACTWall deflection in supercritical flow induces standing waves which significantly influence the flow field close to the wall. This paper analyses the flow in the converging stepped spillway, using two scale-models with different step heights and convergence angles. Results show that the height and the width of the standing wave increase with the

Bottom Aeration of Stepped Spillways
Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 2006The upstream reach of stepped spillway flows may become prone to cavitation damage for large specific discharges because of the absence of air close to its bottom, until the point of bottom self-aeration is reached. This study considers the effect of two aerator types located at the first vertical step face to add air to the chute bottom.

Converging RCC Stepped Spillways
World Environmental and Water Resource Congress 2006, 2006The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) estimates that nearly half of the small watershed dams constructed with their assistance will reach the end of their planned service life within the next 10 years.
