Improving forest age estimation to understand subtropical forest regrowth dynamics using deep learning image segmentation of time‐series historical aerial photographs

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Accurately estimating forest age is key to understanding how forests recover and evaluating restoration success. We developed a two‐step deep learning approach using historical greyscale aerial photographs to map forest age at fine spatial scales. By combining a pre‐trained model with localized fine‐tuning, our U‐Net + ResNet50 architecture achieved ...

An automated mapping satellite system [PDF]

open access: yes
Topographic maps are compiled by manually operated stereoplotters that recreate the geometry of two wide-angle overlapping stereo frame photographs. Continuous imaging systems such as strip cameras, electro-optical scanners, or linear arrays of detectors

Experimental and theoretical investigation of longitudinal tunnel lining joints with confining reinforcement

open access: yesStructural Concrete, EarlyView.
Abstract Precast reinforced concrete segmental linings are frequently used in modern tunneling. In these linings, the longitudinal joints typically have a reduced contact cross‐section and thus often govern the design, particularly in tunnels under high hydrostatic pressure or crossing squeezing or swelling ground with correspondingly high ...

RAGLRO: Retrieval‐Augmented Generation With Large Language Models for Robotic Operations

open access: yesCAAI Transactions on Intelligence Technology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT To enable autonomous operations in complex industrial environments, this paper proposes retrieval‐augmented generation with large language models for robotic operations (RAGLRO), a robotic framework specifically designed for power switchgear operation tasks.

Functional validation of a white pupae minimal gene construct in Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae)

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
An intronless version of the white pupae (wp) gene was engineered to restore the wild type brown puparium color in white pupae phenotype mutants of the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata. Functionality of the minimal gene version (mini‐wp) was verified in vivo, as one copy of mini‐wp successfully restored the wild type phenotype in homozygous ...

CRISPR/Cas9‐based white pupae mutant lines in Bactrocera spp. for sterile insect technique applications

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Bactrocera fruit flies are significant horticultural pests that cause major economic losses. A “neoclassical approach” incorporating genome editing via CRISPR/Cas9 to develop genetic sexing strains (GSS) could render the sterile insect technique (SIT) against these pests more efficient and cost‐effective.

Automated counting of fish in moving diver‐operated videos (DOV) for biodiversity assessments

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, EarlyView.
Abstract Underwater video transects are crucial to assess marine biodiversity and biomass. Counting fish in these videos is labour‐ and time‐intensive and operator‐dependent. Automating this step would create non‐biased biodiversity data and decouple the data collection campaign from any field constraints.

Image‐Based Spatio‐Temporal Interpolation for Split Rendering

open access: yesComputer Graphics Forum, EarlyView.
Abstract Low‐powered devices – such as small form factor head‐mounted displays (HMDs) – struggle to deliver a smooth and high‐quality viewing experience, due to their limited power and rendering capabilities. Cloud rendering attempts to solve the quality issue, but leads to prohibitive latency and bandwidth requirements, hindering use with HMDs over ...

NePO: Neural Point Octrees for Large‐Scale Novel View Synthesis

open access: yesComputer Graphics Forum, EarlyView.
We introduce Neural Point Octrees (NePOs), a scalable radiance field representation that organises point clouds hierarchically for efficient optimisation and rendering of large scale scenes. NePOs enable level of detail selection, joint refinement of appearance and camera poses, and real‐time rendering of hundreds of millions of points.

Democratising Multi‐Projector Displays

open access: yesComputer Graphics Forum, EarlyView.
Spatially augmented reality (SAR) transforms large, surround, collaborative experiences out of VR/AR headsets to the real world by merging content from projectors with the physical environment. This detailed state‐of‐the‐art survey reports on the advancements in multi‐projector aggregation and hardware technologies used to achieve SAR and build ...
