This chapter addresses the need for the aseptic operation of fermentation processes and the procedures adopted to achieve it—the sterilization of the process plant, the medium and air supply. The kinetics and scale-up of medium sterilization by wet heat are discussed in terms of specific death rate (k), Del factor (▿), and nutrient quality criterion (Q)
