Intraosseous neurilemoma of the sternum [PDF]
Sternal benign bone tumor is uncommon. We report a very rare case of intraosseous neurilemoma in the sternum. A girl, 10 years of age, was diagnosed as having a sternal tumor. Computed tomographic scan disclosed a mushroom-shape tumor in the region from inside of the sternum to the ventral soft tissues. Surgical resection was performed. Histopathologic

AbstractFor differentiating a male from a female sternum, a metrical study of 400 adult North Indian sterna (312 males and 88 females) obtained from medicolegal postmortems was made. If the combined length of the manubrium and mesosternum was more than 140 mm. the sternum was male, and if less than 131 mm. it was female.

Development of the sternum during the growth of the embryo is described. Anterior body wall defects in the thoracic region may be severe, leading to ectopia cordis, or mild, as in skin-covered sternal clefts. The embryologic basis for other sternal abnormalities, such as pectus excavatum and pectus carniatum, is not clear; however, abnormalities of rib

Primary tumours of the sternum
Scandinavian Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, 1989In 1966-1986, two men and four women (mean age 47.5 years) underwent surgery for primary sternal tumour. Insufficiency fractures of the sternum
Scandinavian Journal of Rheumatology, 2003Insufficiency fractures occur within weakened bones that are unable to withstand the stress of every day normal activities. The spine, pelvis, and lower long-bone extremities are common sites of insufficiency fractures. Spontaneous sternal insufficiency fracture (SIF) has rarely been reported in elderly patients.

The skeletal changes of severe hyperparathyroidism, known as osteitis fibrosa cystica, are now rarely encountered, because hyperparathyroidism is currently being diagnosed and treated at an early stage. Herein, a case of brown tumor of the sternum is reported; our report adds histologic data on this type of tumor to the literature.

Abstract Although rare, fractures of the sternum probably occur more often than is realized or discovered. They are not diagnosed because serious complicating injuries often accompany them and because they are difficult to depict with the roentgen rays.

Case 1.—A colored man, aged 32, single, steward on a merchant vessel, came to the out-patient department of the House of Relief in August, 1906, complaining of "indigestion" for which he had been treated about eight months without benefit. His family and previous personal history were entirely negative, and may be so assumed, without further detailing.
