Sternum fractures in children are very rare (0.004-0.07% of all paediatric fractures) with an increasing incidence with age. Sternum fractures may result from a direct or an indirect trauma. Most cases are the result of falls or high velocity trauma mechanisms.

Primary malignant sternal tumours are very rare. The most common malignant sternal tumour is a chondrosarcoma. Until now, controversies in the management of malignant sternal tumours were mainly caused by limited clinical experience. However, treatment of malignant sternal tumours should not differ from that of chest wall malignancies.

Abstract A case of chondroma of the body of the sternum without recurrence after seven years is reported and the rarity of this tumor indicated. In addition, it is emphasized that these tumors often recur after treatment and are prone to undergo change to chondrosarcoma. Surgery consists of wide sternal excision.

Primary tumors of the sternum are rare and most of them are malignant. Benign lesions are typically chondromas, bone cysts, or hemangiomas. Among these tumors, hemangiomas are extremely rare. We report a rare case of hemangioma of the sternum. The patient was successfully treated with complete resection of the tumor and sternum stability was obtained ...

AbstractFor differentiating a male from a female sternum, a metrical study of 400 adult North Indian sterna (312 males and 88 females) obtained from medicolegal postmortems was made. If the combined length of the manubrium and mesosternum was more than 140 mm. the sternum was male, and if less than 131 mm. it was female.

Abstract A case of angiosarcoma of the sternum has been presented in which radiation therapy was followed by radical excision of the manubrium and upper part of the sternum. The patient made a rapid recovery from the operation without impairment of function.

Primary tumours of the sternum
Scandinavian Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, 1989In 1966-1986, two men and four women (mean age 47.5 years) underwent surgery for primary sternal tumour. Three of the tumours were benign (two condromata, one osteochondroma) and three were malignant (two chrondrosarcomata, one reticulum cell sarcoma).

The sternum as an electrical shield
2014 36th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, 2014The TASER(®) conducted electrical weapon (CEW) delivers electrical pulses that can temporarily incapacitate subjects. We analyzed the distribution of TASER CEW currents in tissues posterior to the sternum to understand the likelihood of triggering cardiac arrhythmias.

Intraosseous neurilemoma of the sternum [PDF]
Sternal benign bone tumor is uncommon. We report a very rare case of intraosseous neurilemoma in the sternum. A girl, 10 years of age, was diagnosed as having a sternal tumor. Computed tomographic scan disclosed a mushroom-shape tumor in the region from inside of the sternum to the ventral soft tissues. Surgical resection was performed. Histopathologic
