Abstract Little if any de novo synthesis of cholesterol occurs in mid-gestation placenta. The utilized cholesterol comes from foetal and maternal sources. The main products from cholesterol metabolism in placenta are pregnenolone and progesterone. The placental metabolism of progesterone is limited.
