In this first part of a two-part paper, a uniform one-way stiffened plate with clamped ends is modelled as a singly symmetric beam, comprised of one stiffener and its tributary plating.

The vibrations of stiffened plates have been considered by Kirk and Mahalingam. Kirk has treated plates with several stiffeners and also a plate with a single stiffener. For plates with several stiffeners he uses the Rayleigh Method as employed by Warburton.
