The main indications for imaging of the stifle joint are similar to those for other joints: pain elicited upon examination of the joint or in the surrounding bones; joint swelling/effusion or soft tissue swelling around the joint; instability/positive cranial drawer or tibial compression test on physical examination; pre- and postoperative assessment ...

Arthritis of the canine stifle joint
Veterinary Record, 1975A survey of cadaver material was undertaken in order to determine the prevalence of arthritis of the canine stifle joint. One hundred and fifty unselected cadavers were obtained from veterinary practices for this purpose, and their stifle joints were radiographed and dissected to discover abnormalities.

Arthroscopy of the canine stifle joint
Veterinary Record, 1981An arthroscopic examination of 59 canine stifle joints, both normal and diseased, was carried out. Endoscopically the stifle joint was divided into five main anatomical compartments - the suprapatellar pouch, femoropatellar joint, medical compartment, intercondylar notch and the lateral compartment.

Osteochondritis dissecans of the canine stifle joint
Journal of Small Animal Practice, 1980ABSTRACTIn fourteen dogs with osteochondritis dissecans of the stifle joint the lesion was found in the articular cartilage of the medial condyle of the femur in six and the lateral condyle in eight. Both stifle joints were affected in eight dogs and in two of these, both Wolfhounds, the shoulder joints were also affected.

Vascular Supply of the Equine Stifle Joint
American Journal of Veterinary Research, 1980SUMMARY The vascular supply of the equine stifle joint was investigated, using latex vascular injections of pelvic limbs from 3 adult horses and 6 ponies. Vessels were grossly dissected to the small arteriole level. The primary source of blood supply was the femoral artery and its branches which entered the joint on the caudal and medial surfaces.

Stifle Joint Anatomy and Surgical Approaches in the Dog
Veterinary Clinics of North America: Small Animal Practice, 1993This article reviewed the pertinent anatomy and surgical approaches of the canine stifle joint. Anatomically correct approaches to this joint provide for relatively atraumatic entry into the joint, while providing adequate exposure to complete the intra-articular parts of the surgical procedure.

Surgical diseases of the feline stifle joint
Veterinary Clinics of North America: Small Animal Practice, 2002Although stifle disease is seen less frequently in cats than in dogs, accurate diagnosis and proper treatment are important to restoring joint function. The prognosis for return of function after all but the most severe stifle injuries in cats is good if proper surgical technique is used and adequate postoperative restrictions are enforced.
