Shapes for Appurtenances in Stilling Basins

Journal of the Hydraulics Division, 1964
Baffle pier experiments in hydraulic jump type of stilling basins indicate that wedge-shaped blocks with a vertex angle of 120○ dissipate more energy in a shorter length than rectangular blocks. The wedge blocks with the downstream portion cut-back at an angle of 90○ are expected to be free from cavitation.

Fluctuating Pressures in Spillway Stilling Basins

Journal of the Hydraulics Division, 1969
Experimental data is presented on fluctuating pressures in models of spillway stilling basins. Of special interest are data on (1) Variation of pressure fluctuations with location in the basin, (2) variation of fluctuations with discharge, and (3) the growth of a pressure pulse as flow passes through the upstream portion of the hydraulic jump. Pressure

Various Aspects of Stilling Basins

1992
Apart from the elements by which a stilling basin is constituted such as sills or blocks, other aspects of energy dissipation must also be considered, as they have a direct impact on the design of the dissipator. Three of such groups will be treated in this chapter, although the items have relatively few common features.

Hydraulic Jump and Stilling Basins

2010
For the change of flow type from supercritical to subcritical, a hydraulic jump forms. The phenomenon is first described and then the sequent depths are determined using the specific force principle. The profiles include the rectangular channel and the three standard cross-sections, namely, the circular, the egg-shaped and the horseshoe sections ...

Stilling Basins for Outlet Works

2023
Low and intermediate flows in a stilling basin for a single conduit outlet may form an eddy in the basin. This eddy may entrap rocks and debris and result in abrasion and impact damage to the basin. This problem occurs where the invert of the conduit outlet portal is "low" with respect to tailwater. The invert of the outlet portal of a conduit is "low"
