Hydraulic Design of Stilling Basins: Stilling Basin and Wave Suppressors for Canal Structures, Outlet Works, and Diversion Dams (Basin IV)

Where the Froude number of the incoming flow is low, the hydraulic jump produces objectionable waves downstream. This study generalizes the design of two stilling basins and two types of wave suppressors for stabilizing the water surface. Sample problems are used to illustrate the design procedures recommended.

Cavitation Induced by Turbulence in Stilling Basin

It is shown by simple arguments that is stilling basins, intense turbulence of flows could produce conditions favorable to cavitation. A free hydraulic jump occurring in a stilling basin is one case in which this spontaneous cavitation happens, at last intermittently, if the Froude number of the incoming flow is very large.
