Stirling Permutations, Cycle Structure of Permutations and Perfect Matchings [PDF]

open access: yesThe Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 2015
In this paper we provide constructive proofs that the following three statistics are equidistributed: the number of ascent plateaus of Stirling permutations of order $n$, a weighted variant of the number of excedances in permutations of length $n$ and the number of blocks with even maximal elements in perfect matchings of the set $\{1,2,3,\ldots,2n\}$.

The Savage Worlds of Henry Drummond (1851–1897): Science, Racism and Religion in the Work of a Popular Evolutionist

open access: yesJournal of Religious History, EarlyView.
Abstract The savage was a familiar as well as deeply problematic figure in late‐Victorian literary and scientific imaginaries. Savages provided an unstable but capacious and flexible signifier to explore human development and human difference, most often in ways that followed a disturbing racial logic.

Overview of NASA Lewis Research Center free-piston Stirling engine activities [PDF]

open access: yes, 1984
A generic free-piston Stirling technology project is being conducted to develop technologies generic to both space power and terrestrial heat pump applications in a cooperative, cost-shared effort.

Riding Through Norms: Creating and Performing Athletic Femininity at American Ladies’ Equestrian Exhibitions, 1850–1890

open access: yesGender &History, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT During the nineteenth century, American agricultural fairs often featured ladies’ equestrian exhibitions. At these events, women constructed an athletic femininity based on skill and competitiveness that challenged traditional ideals of womanhood.

A capture–recapture framework for combining biologging data with physical captures to decompose and estimate demographic rates: Simulations across life cycles and application to polar bears

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, EarlyView.
Abstract Estimating demographic rates of wild populations is critical to understanding their dynamics but can be challenging because large amounts of data are required, and parts of the life cycle of individuals may be unobserved. In numerous research programmes, capture–recapture (CR) data and biologging data are collected in parallel.

Heat Transfer Intensification in Recuperative Heat Exchangers of the Stirling Engine

open access: yesEngineering Proceedings
The non-stationary mode of movement of the working fluid flow in the Stirling engine causes serious difficulties in the design of heat exchangers. In most cases, the operation of conventional commercial heat exchangers is considered under steady-state ...

Advanced propulsion system concept for hybrid vehicles [PDF]

open access: yes
A series hybrid system, utilizing a free piston Stirling engine with a linear alternator, and a parallel hybrid system, incorporating a kinematic Stirling engine, are analyzed for various specified reference missions/vehicles ranging from a small two ...

Optimizing thermodynamic trajectories using evolutionary and gradient-based reinforcement learning [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Using a model heat engine, we show that neural network-based reinforcement learning can identify thermodynamic trajectories of maximal efficiency. We consider both gradient and gradient-free reinforcement learning.

Changing public perceptions of alcohol, alcohol harms and alcohol policies: A multi‐methods study to develop novel framing approaches

open access: yesAddiction, Volume 120, Issue 4, Page 655-668, April 2025.
Abstract Background and aims Public perceptions of alcohol and its related harms and policies are shaped by multiple discourses and can influence behaviour and policy support. As part of a FrameWorks‐informed project to test framing approaches to improve public understanding and support for evidence‐based alcohol policies in the UK, this research aimed
