Generalized Stirling Numbers and Generalized Stirling Functions

open access: yes, 2011
Here presented is a unified approach to Stirling numbers and their generalizations as well as generalized Stirling functions by using generalized factorial functions, $k$-Gamma functions, and generalized divided difference. Previous well-known extensions of Stirling numbers due to Riordan, Carlitz, Howard, Charalambides-Koutras, Gould-Hopper, Hsu-Shiue,

Efficient Large‐Area Graphene p‐n Junction Terahertz Receivers on an Integrated Optical Platform

open access: yesSmall Methods, EarlyView.
An antenna‐integrated graphene Salisbury screen (AgSS) p‐n junction is engineered to detect radiation at 2.8 THz with room‐temperature noise equivalent powers < 300 pWHz−1/2, response time < 5 ns and a power dynamic range larger than four orders of magnitude.

Maximizing the detection probabilities of dusky grouse for population monitoring

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Despite its status as a game species in the western USA, rigorous monitoring of dusky grouse Dendragapus obscurus populations is limited. Obtaining an adequate number of observations for effective population monitoring of dusky grouse is challenging due to difficult‐to‐reach montane habitats, cryptic behaviors, and limited personnel, time, and funds at

Comparing manual and automated methods for identifying individual great gray owls via territorial calls

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, EarlyView.
We compared 2 audio analysis methods: 1) manual spectral analysis, and 2) automated mel‐frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs), to identify great gray owls (Strix nebulosa) to individual using territorial calls. The MFCC method was 97.6% accurate at classifying individuals whereas spectral analysis had only a 77.2% accuracy rate.

An integrative, peer‐reviewed and open‐source cooperative‐breeding database (Co‐BreeD)

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
Co‐BreeD is the first updatable and open‐source database dedicated to cooperative breeding. It enables continuous, non‐binary measurement of cooperative breeding, transforming how we study breeding systems across taxa. Further, by linking biological estimates to their exact sampling location and period, it allows for unprecedented accuracy in the ...

Labour's Commitment to 1.5 Million New Homes: Housing Delivery as an Orchestrator‐Intermediary Challenge

open access: yesThe Political Quarterly, EarlyView.
Abstract In the UK, the new Labour government has linked the intention to deliver more homes to reform of the planning system, which is seen as a key barrier. Two assumptions inform this reform. First, the system is sound, but there are problems with its administration.

A Determinant of Stirling Cycle Numbers Counts Unlabeled Acyclic Single-Source Automata

open access: yesDiscrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, 2008
We show that a determinant of Stirling cycle numbers counts unlabeled acyclic single-source automata. The proof involves a bijection from these automata to certain marked lattice paths and a sign-reversing involution to evaluate the determinant.
