Contemporary Economic Policy, Volume 43, Issue 2, Page 260-270, April 2025.Abstract In December 2022, Cristiano Ronaldo, five‐time Ballon d’Or winner and the most‐followed person on Instagram, signed for Al‐Nassr in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This marked one of several expensive, recent interventions by the kingdom in global sports markets. We exploit the timing of this event to estimate superstar effects.

Success and failure in England's patent system: New evidence from patent applications, 1783–1834
The Economic History Review, EarlyView.Abstract Our understanding of the relationship between the English patent system and technical change during the industrial revolution is based entirely on the study of successful patents. We address this feature by providing the first study of unsuccessful patent applications in England during the first industrial revolution.
