From Stochastic Thermodynamics to Thermodynamic Inference

Annual Review of Condensed Matter Physics, 2019
For a large class of nonequilibrium systems, thermodynamic notions like work, heat, and, in particular, entropy production can be identified on the level of fluctuating dynamical trajectories. Within stochastic thermodynamics various fluctuation theorems relating these quantities have been proven.

Classical Stochastic Thermodynamics

2022
Abstract After an introduction to the phenomenological theory of non-equilibrium thermodynamics, this theory is derived and extended forsmall systems described by a classical Markov process obeying local detailed balance. Thermodynamic definitions for internal energy, heat, work, entropy and entropy production are provided along a single

Towards Stochastic Continuum Thermodynamics

Journal of Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics, 2002
Two lines of studies for dealing with continua with a microstructure are compared. The first one is the line developed by the author and his coworkers introducing stochastic continuum mechanics with random microstructural features on a scale smaller than the representative volume element.

Quantum Stochastic Thermodynamics

2022
Abstract Processes at the nanoscale happen far away from the thermodynamic limit, far from equilibrium and are dominated by fluctuations and, perhaps, even quantum effects. This book establishes a consistent thermodynamic framework for such processes by combining tools from non-equilibrium statistical mechanics and the theory of open ...

Stochastic approach to irreversible thermodynamics

Chaos: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Nonlinear Science, 2017
An extension of classical irreversible thermodynamics pioneered by Ilya Prigogine is developed, in which fluctuations of macroscopic observables accounting for microscopic-scale processes are incorporated. The contribution of the fluctuations to the entropy production is derived from a generalized entropy balance equation and expressed in terms of the ...

Stochastic thermodynamics: An introduction

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2011
These seminar notes contain a brief introduction into the principles of stochastic thermodynamics and some of its recent ramifications from a personal perspective. Thermodynamic concepts like work, exchanged heat and entropy production can consistently be defined on the level of individual fluctuating trajectories taken from either a time‐dependent or ...
