NONSTATIONARITY IN THE DISTRIBUTION of security returns is a theoretically acceptable phenomenon that is well confirmed empirically. Less acceptable from a theoretical viewpoint is the possibility that the nonstationarity should be associated with "irrelevant" events such as stock splits and stock dividends.
