Impact of Body Weight Loss During Preoperative Chemoradiotherapy on Prognosis of Patients With Lower Rectal Cancer

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between changes in body weight and composition during chemoradiotherapy, such as the psoas muscle mass index, visceral fat index, and subcutaneous fat index obtained from computed tomography images, and long‐term outcomes in rectal cancer patients.

Stomatal Ratio Showing No Response to Light Intensity in Oryza

open access: yesPlants, 2022
Stomata control carbon and water exchange between the leaves and the ambient. However, the plasticity responses of stomatal traits to growth conditions are still unclear, especially for monocot leaves.

Controls on carbon and energy exchange by a black spruce - moss ecosystem: Testing the mathematical model Ecosys with data from the BOREAS experiment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Stomatal limitations to mass and energy exchange over boreal black spruce forests may be caused by low needle N concentrations that limit CO2 fixation rates.

Psoas Muscle Volume as a Predictor of Postoperative Complications in Patients Undergoing Emergency Surgery for Strangulated Small Bowel Obstruction: A Retrospective Single‐Center Study

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
This retrospective study identified low preoperative psoas muscle volume, measured by computed tomography, as an independent predictor of postoperative complications in patients undergoing emergency surgery for strangulated small bowel obstruction. Low psoas muscle volume, particularly in older adults, was associated with cardiopulmonary and systemic ...

Phylogenetic and biogeographic controls of plant nighttime stomatal conductance [PDF]

open access: yesNew Phytologist, 2019
Summary The widely documented phenomenon of nighttime stomatal conductance gsn could lead to substantial water loss with no carbon gain, and thus it remains unclear whether nighttime stomatal conductance confers a functional advantage. Given that studies of gsn have focused on controlled environments or small numbers of species in natural ...

Linking xylem hydraulic conductivity and vulnerability to the leaf economics spectrum--a cross-species study of 39 evergreen and deciduous broadleaved subtropical tree species. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
While the fundamental trade-off in leaf traits related to carbon capture as described by the leaf economics spectrum is well-established among plant species, the relationship of the leaf economics spectrum to stem hydraulics is much less known.

Prognostic Value of Psoas Major Muscle Volume in Assessing Sarcopenia in Elderly Patients With Rectal Cancer

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
This study investigates the prognostic utility of a novel volumetric indicator—psoas volume index (PVI)—for assessing sarcopenia in elderly rectal cancer patients. Sarcopenia classified by our proposed PVI cut‐off values was associated with poor nutritional and inflammatory status, and patients with low PVI showed significantly worse long‐term outcomes.
