Migratory flight is energetically challenging, requiring alternating phases of fuel catabolism and fuel accumulation, accompanied by dramatic changes in body composition and behavior. Baseline corticosterone (CORT; the primary glucocorticoid in birds) is thought to underlie transitions between fuel catabolism during flight, fuel deposition during ...

Spatial Behaviour at Stopovers
2012This chapter deals with the range, direction and pattern of diurnal movements of nocturnal passerine migrants at stopovers. Contrary to the popular assumption, these movements are shown not to be directed generally towards the goal of migration, but to be purely habitat-related. The results of the original studies of territoriality vs.

Stopover; then on to Quantum Cryptography
2013This chapter is exceptional insofar as the formalism is not developed further. Rather, it serves to collect our previously acquired knowledge, to compare and to check where there are open questions of form or content. In the second part of the chapter, we take up quantum cryptography.

Stopover duration of fall‐migrating dabbling ducks
The Journal of Wildlife Management, 2012AbstractThe amount of time migrating birds spend at stopover sites, or stopover duration, partially determines an individual's access to resources, the environmental conditions encountered, and the exposure to predation, which in turn affect survival and fecundity. As such, migratory behaviors such as stopover duration can have a considerable effect on

Spring Stopover Ecology of Migrant Western Sandpipers
The Condor, 1998We describe stopover ecology for 132 migrant radiomarked Western Sandpipers (Calidris mauri) relocated repeatedly along the Pacific Flyway of North America. Eighty-eight percent of radiomarked birds were detected at 1-5 sites north of their banding sites, at distances ranging from 240-4,000 km away.

Two-vehicle Mars stopover with rendezvous.
Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets, 1966The manned Mars-stopover mission analyzed employs two vehicles: one that transfers the stopover crew from Earth to an orbit about Mars, and one that rendezvous at Mars to return the crew to Earth. Using the total mass required on Earth parking orbit as a basis, this two-vehicle mode is compared to the "standard" single-vehicle stopover.

Stopover ecology of a migratory ungulate.
The Journal of animal ecology, 20121. Birds that migrate long distances use stopover sites to optimize fuel loads and complete migration as quickly as possible. Stopover use has been predicted to facilitate a time-minimization strategy in land migrants as well, but empirical tests have been lacking, and alternative migration strategies have not been considered. 2.
