Evaluating local climate in global storm-resolving models with the Köppen-Geiger classification

open access: yes
Global storm-resolving models aspire to become digital twins of the Earth, delivering information at the local scale at which humans experience climate. We evaluated how well two such models, ICON and IFS-FESOM, reproduce the climate as classified by the Köppen-Geiger system, using 30-year (2020-2049) simulations from the nextGEMS project at 9~km ...

Phase Engineering of Atomically Precise Nanoclusters (APNCs) of Gold and Beyond

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Engineering the structural phase of materials is of paramount importance for both fundamental research and practical applications. In this Review, we summarize the recent progress in controlling the phases of atomically precise nanoclusters (APNCs) of gold, silver and copper, as well as bimetallic systems. The phase‐enabled material properties of APNCs

Corona-heated Accretion-disk Reprocessing: Frequency-resolved Lag Predictions for UV/Optical Reverberation Mapping of Active Galactic Nuclei

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Continuum reverberation mapping with high-cadence, long-term UV/optical monitoring of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) enables us to resolve the AGN central engine sizes on different timescales.

Recent Progress in the Phase‐Controlled Synthesis of Ruthenium Nanocrystals for Catalytic Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Template effect and kinetic control enable crystal‐phase engineering of Ru nanocrystals, granting access to either metastable fcc‐Ru or stable hcp‐Ru with distinct surface structures, thermal stabilities, and catalytic behaviors. Moreover, the hcp‐Ru can further serve as an epitaxial template to direct Pd and Rh nanocrystals into the metastable hcp ...

Orbital‐Hybridizable Nanoseed Interphase Enables One‐Minute Rechargeable, Energy‐Dense Anode‐Free Aqueous Zinc Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
An orbital‐hybridizable nanoseed (OHNS) interphase induces strong orbital hybridization between Zn and carbon edges, accelerating Zn nucleation while suppressing 2D surface diffusion. This interfacial electronic regulation drives uniform, dense, and (002)‐oriented Zn growth, enabling stable and fast charging behavior in anode‐free aqueous Zn batteries.

ICON Simulations Suggest Model-Dependent Cloud Feedbacks in Global Storm-Resolving Models

open access: yes
Abstract Climate feedbacks, key determinants of Earth’s temperature response to radiative forcing, remain uncertain, largely because of challenges in representing cloud and convective processes. Global storm-resolving models (GSRMs), which explicitly resolve deep convection, have recently emerged as a promising alternative to conventional ...

Energy Band Alignment and Electro‐Optical Behavior of Nearly Unstrained Monolayer MoS2 Heterostructures With GaN

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Large size (∼100 µm) monolayer MoS2 grown by LPI‐CVD on n‐GaN exhibit a high n‐type doping, very low strain, and a type‐I band alignment at MoS2/GaN interface. Photocurrent measurements under illumination with photon energies from ∼2 to ∼5 eV show superior electro‐optical performances of these MoS2/n‐GaN heterojunctions as compared to Ni/n‐GaN devices ...

A 3D‐Printed Blister Test Platform for Quantifying Biointerface Adhesion Mechanisms

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
A 3D‐printed blister platform enables energy‐resolved characterization of soft hydrogel–rigid interfaces. Integrating precision pressure control with hyperelastic modeling directly quantifies adhesion energy (G) and R‐curve toughening. Results reveal that modulating hydrogel concentration and surface roughness drives a tunable transition from cohesive ...

The Vertical Structure of Tropical Temperature Change in Global Storm‐Resolving Model Simulations of Climate Change

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Global storm‐resolving model (GSRM) simulations (kilometer‐scale horizontal resolution) of the atmosphere can capture the interaction between the scales of deep cumulus convection and the large‐scale dynamics and thermodynamic properties of the ...

Material Selection and Geometric Design for Few‐filament Shape Memory Polymer Yarns for Force Generation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A custom shape memory polymer material selection process relates quantitative application criteria (e.g., compression garment yarns) to material characterization information. The selected materials are manufactured into yarn geometries, which expand the design space by creating structural stress‐strain profiles beyond the nominal material stress‐strain
