Evaluation of Global Climate and Storm-Resolving Model Representations of Mixed-Phase Clouds and Their Hemispheric Contrasts

open access: yesAtmosphere
Mixed-phase clouds, in which liquid droplets and ice crystals coexist at temperatures between −38 °C and 0 °C, play a critical role in Earth’s radiation budget.

Thermospheric Neutral Density Variation During the “SpaceX” Storm: Implications From Physics‐Based Whole Geospace Modeling

open access: yesSpace Weather, 2022
The Starlink satellites launched on 3 February 2022 were lost before they fully arrived in their designated orbits. The loss was attributed to two moderate geomagnetic storms that occurred consecutively on 3–4 February.

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

Contrasting Improvements in Storm‐Track Activity Over the North Atlantic and North Pacific in Global Storm‐Resolving Models: A Case Study in the Winter of 2020

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Storm‐resolving models have the potential to outperform conventional models with a horizontal resolution of 150 km in simulating global atmospheric circulation by resolving deep convection and gravity waves.

The Impact of Model Resolution on the Southern Hemisphere in Community Climate System Model Version 4 Idealized Climate Simulations

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2023
Model resolution plays a large role in accurately simulating the Southern Hemisphere circulation in both the ocean and atmosphere. Resolving the mesoscale field is important as it has been shown to have a significant impact on the large-scale climate in ...

Learning by Doing: Seasonal and Diurnal Features of Tropical Precipitation in a Global‐Coupled Storm‐Resolving Model

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2022
Abstract Using the global and coupled ICOsahedral Nonhydrostatic model with the Sapphire configuration (ICON‐S) and a grid spacing of 5 km, we describe seasonal and diurnal features of the tropical rainbelt and assess the limits of ICON‐S in representing tropical precipitation.

EDNRB‐dependent endothelin signaling reduces proliferation and promotes proneural‐to‐mesenchymal transition in gliomas

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Glioma cells mainly express the endothelin receptor EDNRB, while EDNRA is restricted to a perivascular tumor subpopulation. Endothelin signaling reduces glioma cell proliferation while promoting migration and a proneural‐to‐mesenchymal transition associated with poor prognosis. This pathway activates Ca2+, K+, ERK, and STAT3 signalings and is regulated

Radiative, Hydrologic, and Circulation Responses to Warming in Cess‐Potter Simulations Using the Global 3.25‐km SCREAM

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems
Using the global 3.25‐km Simple Cloud Resolving E3SM Atmosphere Model (SCREAM 3 km), a pair of 13‐month Cess‐Potter simulations are performed to quantify the radiative feedbacks and the hydrologic and circulation responses to warming. Large‐scale aspects

Estimation of total lightning from various storm parameters: A cloud‐resolving model study [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 2010
Because explicit prediction of the electrical activity in storms is computationally expensive and the processes are still poorly understood, an attractive way to predict lightning flash rates in numerical models is to rely on correlations between the flash rate and available model parameters.

Developmental programmes drive cellular plasticity, disease progression and therapy resistance in lung adenocarcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study shows that lung adenocarcinomas exploit developmental branching morphogenesis to acquire a therapy resistant basal‐like tumour cell state. This process was found to be regulated by combined TP53 loss‐of‐function and type‐I interferon signalling, identifying a novel axis for biomarker and therapeutic target discovery.
