Energy absorption in lattice structures in dynamics: Nonlinear FE simulations [PDF]
An experimental study of the stress–strain behaviour of titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) lattice structures across a range of loading rates has been reported in a previous paper [1].

Realistic time-scale fully atomistic simulations of surface nucleation of dislocations in pristine nanopillars [PDF]
We use our recently proposed accelerated dynamics algorithm (Tiwary and van de Walle, 2011) to calculate temperature and stress dependence of activation free energy for surface nucleation of dislocations in pristine Gold nanopillars under realistic loads.

Temperature and Strain-Rate Dependence of Surface Dislocation Nucleation
Dislocation nucleation is essential to the plastic deformation of small-volume crystalline solids. The free surface may act as an effective source of dislocations to initiate and sustain plastic flow, in conjunction with bulk sources. Here, we develop an atomistic modeling framework to address the probabilistic nature of surface dislocation nucleation.

The breakage prediction for hydromechanical deep drawing based on local bifurcation theory [PDF]
A criterion of sheet metal localized necking under plane stress was established based on the bifurcation theory and the characteristics theory of differential equation. In order to be capable to incorporate the directional dependence of the plastic strain

Strain Rate Dependent Behaviour of a Natural Stiff Clay
The experimental results reported in this paper were obtained performing monotonic, cyclic and dynamic torsional shear tests on a stiff Italian clay in the pre-failure stress-strain range. The experimental clearly demonstrate that the small strain values of shear stiffness and damping ratio are significantly affected by strain rate : while the initial ...

A multiscale approach for modeling crystalline solids [PDF]
In this paper we present a modeling approach to bridge the atomistic with macroscopic scales in crystalline materials. The methodology combines identification and modeling of the controlling unit processes at microscopic level with the direct atomistic ...

A strain-rate-dependent force model of lithospheric strength [PDF]
Summary This study investigates the rate of intraplate deformation, the vertically integrated stress magnitude and vertical distributions of tectonic stress in continental lithosphere that is subjected to horizontal tectonic force. The fundamental assumption of this study is that the magnitude of the imposed tectonic force depends on the rate of ...
