Initially stressed strain gradient elasticity: A constitutive model incorporates size effects and initial stresses

open access: yes
Unlike ordinary solid materials, underground nano-materials such as kerogen, have relatively small dimensions and suffer from unavoidable in-situ stresses.

Thermoelastic damping in piezothermoelastic nanobeam resonators under the strain gradient theory with micro-inertia and non-fourier heat conduction

open access: yesResults in Engineering
Thermoelastic damping (TED) is a primary source of energy dissipation in oscillating structures. The classical TED model is inadequate for micro- and nanoscale structures due to small-scale effects.

Dual‐Mode Magnetic Elastomer for On‐Demand Motion and Degradation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A dual‐mode magnetic elastomer is introduced, enabling DC field‐driven programmable actuation and AC field‐driven magnetothermal degradation. GHz‐range magnetic fields generate ultrafast heating of magnetic nanoparticles that activates cleavage of the silicone elastomer matrix.

Strain gradient elasticity with geometric nonlinearities and its computational evaluation

open access: yes, 2015
The theory of linear elasticity is insufficient at small length scales, e.g., when dealing with micro-devices. In particular, it cannot predict the “size effect” observed at the micro- and nanometer scales.

Historical Foundation and Practical Guideline for Ferroelectric Switching Kinetic Studies

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The P and U pulses in the conventional PUND measurements are not identical because of the interplay between switching current and the measurement circuit components. This circuit effect can lead to a shift in polarization transients and misinterpreted physics in the switching kinetics.

Universal Displacements in Linear Strain-Gradient Elasticity

open access: yes
We study universal displacement fields in three-dimensional linear strain-gradient elasticity within the Toupin-Mindlin first strain-gradient theory. Building on the approach of Yavari (2020), we derive, for each material symmetry class, the universality PDEs obtained by requiring the equilibrium equations (in the absence of body forces) to hold for ...

Isogeometric analysis of 2D gradient elasticity

open access: yes, 2010
In the present contribution the concept of isogeometric analysis is extended towards the numerical solution of the problem of gradient elasticity in two dimensions.

3D Printing Innovations in Polymeric Porous and Patterned Architecture

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Polymeric foams occupy a unique structural space between dense solids and open networks, where engineered void fraction governs mechanical compliance, thermal resistance, and mass transport. Additive manufacturing now enables precise spatial control over cellular architecture, unlocking designer foam structures across applications spanning crash ...

In Situ Crystalline‐Amorphous Composite Oxide Structure Suppressing Thermal Wear Instability for Refractory Multi‐Principal Element Alloy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
An effective strategy is developed to overcome the medium temperatures wear resistance degradation in refractory multi‐principal element alloys. By utilizing chemical short‐range ordering to trigger oxygen‐induced amorphization, a composite oxide structure is formed, which combines high hardness with robust stiffness.

Nanoengineered Binetworks in Multifunctional Anionic Block Polymer Mesoblends for Improved Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Mesoblends consist of a nanostructured polymer into which a second polymer is imbibed with a selective solvent. In this work, a solvent‐templatable pentablock terpolymer possessing a sulfonated midblock is modified with a hydrophilic polymer that is photocrosslinked in situ, yielding a hierarchical binetwork.
