On variational principles in coupled strain-gradient elasticity

open access: yesMathematics and Mechanics of Solids, 2022
Strain-gradient elasticity is a special case of high-gradient theories in which the potential energy density depends on the first and second gradient of the displacement field. The presence of a coupling term in the material law leads to a non-diagonal quadratic form of the stored energy, which makes it difficult for the derivation of fundamental ...

Screw dislocation in a Bi-medium within strain gradient elasticity revisited

open access: yesJournal of the Mechanical Behavior of Materials, 2019
In this paper, we consider a straight screw dis-location near a flat interface between two elastic media in the framework of strain gradient elasticity (as studied by Gutkin et. al. [1]) by now taking care of some incomplete calculations).

A method for creating a class of triangular C1 finite elements

open access: yes, 2011
Finite elements providing a C1 continuous interpolation are useful in the numerical solution of problems where the underlying partial differential equation is of fourth order, such as beam and plate bending and deformation of strain-gradient-dependent ...

Decay for strain gradient porous elastic waves

open access: yesZeitschrift für angewandte Mathematik und Physik, 2023
AbstractWe study the one-dimensional problem for the linear strain gradient porous elasticity. Our aim is to analyze the behavior of the solutions with respect to the time variable when a dissipative structural mechanism is introduced in the system. We consider five different scenarios: hyperviscosity and viscosity for the displacement component and ...

A geometrically nonlinear Euler–Bernoulli beam model within strain gradient elasticity with isogeometric analysis and lattice structure applications

open access: yes, 2020
The nonlinear governing differential equation and variational formulation of the Euler–Bernoulli beam model are formulated within Mindlin’s strain gradient elasticity theory of form II by adopting the von Kármán strain assumption.

Revisiting Stability Criteria in Ball‐Milled High‐Entropy Alloys: Do Hume–Rothery and Thermodynamic Rules Equally Apply?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 6, March 2025.
The stability criteria affecting the formation of high‐entropy alloys, particularly focusing in supersaturated solid solutions produced by mechanical alloying, are analyzed. Criteria based on Hume–Rothery rules are distinguished from those derived from thermodynamic relations. The formers are generally applicable to mechanically alloyed samples.

On the consistency of the nonlocal strain gradient elasticity

open access: yesInternational Journal of Engineering Science, 2019
The nonlocal strain gradient elasticity theory is being widely used to address structural problems at the micro- and nano-scale, in which size effects cannot be disregarded. The application of this approach to bounded solids shows the necessity to fulfil boundary conditions, derived from an energy variational principle, to achieve equilibrium, as well ...

A control volume-based finite element method for plane micropolar elasticity

open access: yes, 2008
This paper describes the development of a numerical procedure for predicting deformations and stresses in a loaded two-dimensional membrane exhibiting micropolar or Cosserat constitutive behaviour. The procedure employs a conventional finite element (FE)
