Karl Popper and the Mechanisms of Hydrogen Embrittlement

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Representation of the beginning of loss of ductility rather than embrittlement. Small concentrations of hydrogen in a diffusible form within iron are well‐established to harm the mechanical integrity of steels. There are theories that attempt to explain the pernicious role of hydrogen.

Influence of flexoelectric, small-scale, surface and residual stress on the nonlinear vibration of sigmoid, exponential and power-law FG Timoshenko nano-beams

open access: yesJournal of Low Frequency Noise, Vibration and Active Control, 2019
This research deals with the nonlinear vibration of the functionally graded nano-beams based on the nonlocal elasticity theory considering surface and flexoelectric effects.

Fatigue Crack Initiation and Growth in Nanocrystalline Ni at Multiple Length‐Scales

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Overview of miniaturized in situ SEM fatigue setup and resultant fatigue crack growth data for nanocrystalline Ni. The presented study focuses on the analysis of fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) in focused ion beam‐notched microcantilevers prepared from nanocrystalline (NC) Ni as a model material.

Reduced strain gradient elasticity model with two characteristic lengths: fundamentals and application to straight dislocations

open access: yes, 2022
In this paper, the reduced strain gradient elasticity model with two characteristic lengths is proposed and presented. The reduced strain gradient elasticity model is a particular case of Mindlin’s first strain gradient elasticity theory with a reduced ...

Influence of Test Temperature and Test Frequency on Fatigue Life of Aluminum Alloy EN AW‐2618A

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The influence of test temperature and test frequency on the fatigue life of EN AW‐2618A is investigated. High‐cycle fatigue tests are performed at different test temperatures and frequencies on the 1000 h/230°C overaged state. Both test parameters reduce fatigue life due to time‐dependent damage mechanisms.

Interaction between an edge dislocation near a circular void within the framework of the theory of strain gradient elasticity

open access: yesJournal of the Mechanical Behavior of Materials, 2018
The purpose of this paper was to consider an edge dislocation near a circular hole within the isotropic theory of gradient elasticity. The stress field is derived with the help of a stress function method.

Vibrations of the Euler–Bernoulli Beam Under a Moving Force based on Various Versions of Gradient Nonlocal Elasticity Theory: Application in Nanomechanics

open access: yesStudia Geotechnica et Mechanica, 2020
Two models of vibrations of the Euler–Bernoulli beam under a moving force, based on two different versions of the nonlocal gradient theory of elasticity, namely, the Eringen model, in which the strain is a function of stress gradient, and the nonlocal ...

Recycling of NiTi Shape Memory Alloys: Fundamental and Technological Aspects of a Vacuum Induction Melting Processing Route

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The present study investigates recycling of NiTi shape memory alloys via vacuum induction melting. An ingot was synthesized from elemental Ni and Ti and subjected to three subsequent remelting cycles. Remelting increases process durations and impurity levels and adversely affects microstructures and functional properties.

Soft Mechanical‐Electrical Logic Using Liquid Metal‐Filled 3D‐Printed Architectures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
We present 3D‐printed soft mechanical–electrical logic elements that use liquid metal–filled silicone tubes actuated by thermoplastic polyurethane/polylactic acid (TPU/PLA) architectures to produce Boolean operations. Complementary normally open and normally closed unit cells perform repeatable binary transitions and can be combined into more complex ...

Fluid damping phenomena in a slender microbeam modelled on nonclassical theory

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2014
This work deals with the evaluation of the squeeze-film damping in an electrically-actuated microbeam considering the effects of an imposed static deflection.
