Strain Measurement in Composite Materials Using Embedded Strain Gauges

Key Engineering Materials, 1997
The feasibility of the use of embedded strain gauges for the measurement of internal deformation in laminated composite material has been investigated. The methodology consists in inserting the strain gauges among the layers of the laminate before polymerisation in the oven.

Neutron Strain measurement

Materials Science and Technology, 2011
The use of neutrons has extended the technique of diffraction strain measurement from an essentially two-dimensional, near-surface tool using X-rays to a true three-dimensional method. The depth scale has gone from micrometres to millimetres. This initially gave rise to subsurface measurements of type I residual macrostresses in weldments and type II ...

Strain Measurement with Microsensors

Journal of Composite Materials, 1997
A model is developed for determining the farfield strains in laminated composites from the strain values indicated by a microsensing device embedded inside the material. The microsensing device considered here consists of three elements: a sensor, a circuit chip, and an antenna. The sensor detects changes in the strains in the material surrounding the

Strain gauge measurement

1992
Strain gauge model testing is commonly applied in mechanical and civil engineering to complement analytical, numerical and finite element models and to assess the relative behaviour of components. In biomechanics comparative investigation of product performance in vitro is often obtained by testing models fitted with different prostheses in a ...

Measures of Finite Strain and Stress-Strain Relations

Journal of the Physical Society of Japan, 1960
Ordinarily, stress-strain relation of Lagrange's representation is written in terms of Lagrange's representation of stress σ i j and the Love measure e i j L . From the above relation, we can derive Reiner's equation in terms of Euler's representation of stress T λµ and the Green measure e λµ β .

Aspects of strain measures and strain rates

Acta Mechanica, 1986
In finite homogeneous deformation processes, the principal triad generally rotates with respect to a material element during the deformation. The material derivative of the logarithmic strain is no longer simply related to the rate of deformation tensor, and this is exemplified herein.

Measurement of cyclic strain

Journal of Scientific Instruments, 1960
The paper describes a versatile multi-way instrument for measuring periodic strain gauge signals. The strain is either shown on a meter or can be accurately measured on an oscilloscope in terms of resistance change. Fullscale deflexion of the meter is obtained for strains in the order of ±10-4.

Dynamic strain measurements

1995
Dynamic measurements are a required part of any fatigue test. Two frequently measured parameters are applied load and testpiece strain. Load cells and extensometers are frequently used to make those measurements, respectively. Detailed standards for static calibrations of these devices have been available for many years.
