Comparison of various models for strain‐softening

Engineering Computations, 1988
This paper presents a comparison of various models for strain‐softening due to damage such as cracking or void growth, as proposed recently in the literature. Continuum‐based models expressed in terms of softening stress—strain relations, and fracture‐type models expressed in terms of softening stress—displacement relations are distinguished.

Strain-softening analysis of concrete structures

Computers & Structures, 1989
The numerical model of concrete should account for tension and compression softening phenomena observed experimentally. The finite element model presented here allows multidirectional strain-softening to take place within the element. The effective use of strain-softening models depends on solution routines employed with the model.

Strain-Induced Softening of Certain Eutectics

Physical Review Letters, 1980
It is suggested that the considerable softening of the lattice of certain superconducting eutectic mixtures, and the accompanying increase in transition temperature are the result of large unrelieved strains that weaken the effective spring constant between neighboring atoms.

A strain-softening bar with rehardening revisited

Mathematics and Mechanics of Solids, 2015
We revisit, from the standpoint of the modern theory of phase transitions, the classical problem of stretching of a strain-softening bar with rehardening, considered earlier by Belytschko et al. We show that the classical solution, which is based on an empiric condition motivated by finite-element simulations, is not always consistent with the second ...

Strain‐softening analysis of a spherical cavity

International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, 2011
SUMMARYThis paper studies the excavation of a spherical cavity subjected to hydrostatic initial stresses in the infinite homogeneous and isotropic rock mass with strain‐softening Mohr–Coulomb (M‐C) and Hoek–Brown (H‐B) behaviors. Numerical solutions of the spherical cavity are obtained and the application to determining stress–strain curve of strain ...

Experimental procedure for verifying strain-softening in concrete

International Journal of Fracture, 2004
A procedure is proposed for identifying uniaxial stress-strain relations in compressed concrete. By considering the specimen as a structure, the procedure identifies effective properties from experimental data. This involves a modification of traditionally identified uniaxial stress-strain relationship.

Thermodynamic Consequences of Strain Softening in Tension

Journal of Engineering Mechanics, 1986
The strain softening behavior of a tension bar loaded by an increasing elongation is analyzed. The constitutive model consists of linear elasticity in combination with associated plasticity theory using a maximum tensile stress criterion as yield surface.
