Post‐LECA Origin and Diversification of an Axonemal Outer Arm Dynein Motor

open access: yesCytoskeleton, Volume 83, Issue 7, Page 457-465, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Dyneins were present in the last eukaryotic common ancestor (LECA) and play key roles in eukaryotic biology. Axonemal dyneins form the inner and outer arms that power ciliary beating, and it has long been recognized that outer arms in some organisms contain two different heavy chain motors, whereas those from other species contain a third unit

Metabarcoding of Broad‐Diet Nototheniid Fish Stomachs Reveals Newly Detected Antarctic Parasite Signals and Potential Host Associations

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 8, Issue 4, July‐August 2026.
Using 18S rDNA metabarcoding of stomach contents from two Antarctic nototheniid fishes, we detected 242 parasite OTUs. Protists dominated diversity, metazoans dominated abundance, and depth structured assemblages. Novel parasite–host associations and previously unreported pathogenic protists highlight fish metabarcoding as a tool for biodiversity and ...

Intragroup phylogenetic distance and trunk length of Stramenopiles groups.

open access: yes, 2013
A complementary view of phylogenetic structure of Stramenopiles is shown by displaying the trunk length (vertical lines) and the Mean Phylogenetic Distance (vertical boxes) of each group (based on tree in Figure 2B).

Comparative plastid genomics of Synurophyceae: inverted repeat dynamics and gene content variation

open access: yesBMC Evolutionary Biology, 2019
Background The Synurophyceae is one of most important photosynthetic stramenopile algal lineages in freshwater ecosystems. They are characterized by siliceous scales covering the cell or colony surface and possess plastids of red-algal secondary or ...

eDNA Collected by Custom‐Built Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) Reveals Spatio‐Temporal Shifts in Tropical Coral Reef Faunal Communities

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 8, Issue 4, July‐August 2026.
Self‐constructed Unmanned Surface Vehicles were deployed at coral reefs on Reunion Island to capture environmental DNA (eDNA), identifying changes in animal communities depending on the time of day and sampling station. These findings suggest specific sites for high‐frequency, long‐term eDNA monitoring using low‐cost mobile devices.

Sequence alignments used in a phylogenetic analysis of Triparma retinervis (Bolidophyceae, Stramenopiles).

open access: yes, 2019
Multiple sequence alignments of 18S rDNA and rbcL gene of the genus Triparma for a phylogenetic analysis of Triparma retinervis (Bolidophyceae, Stramenopiles).

Exploring the uncultured microeukaryote majority in the oceans: reevaluation of ribogroups within stramenopiles [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
13 pages, 3 figures, 4 tablesMolecular surveys in planktonic marine systems have unveiled a large novel diversity of small protists. A large part of this diversity belongs to basal heterotrophic stramenopiles and is distributed in a set of polyphyletic ...

The Plastid Genome of the Cryptomonad Teleaulax amphioxeia.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Teleaulax amphioxeia is a photosynthetic unicellular cryptophyte alga that is distributed throughout marine habitats worldwide. This alga is an important plastid donor to the dinoflagellate Dinophysis caudata through the ciliate Mesodinium rubrum in the ...

Differential Effects of Long‐Term Fertilization and Plant Species Richness on Soil Fungi and Protists

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 32, Issue 7, July 2026.
Fertilization strongly influences plant and soil biodiversity, yet it remains unclear whether fertilization alone drives shifts in soil biota (fungi and protists) or whether associated losses in plant diversity further intensify these effects. Moreover, it is unknown whether fertilization and plant diversity decline act through similar mechanisms or ...

Integrated overview of stramenopile ecology, taxonomy, and heterotrophic origin. [PDF]

open access: yesISME J
Abstract Stramenopiles represent a significant proportion of aquatic and terrestrial biota. Most biologists can name a few, but these are limited to the phototrophic (e.g. diatoms and kelp) or parasitic species (e.g. oomycetes, Blastocystis), with free-living heterotrophs largely overlooked. Though our attention is slowly turning towards
